Noob want help for WHEELS/OFFSET??

Hey
I have 294 style wheels on my bmw z4 e89 30i. and i would like to buy a different set of rims for it. After a few search on the internet, i came across width, offset and height? I am not too sure. So basically the rims i'll be getting are;
18X8 35ET/47ET, 5X120
Which i have no idea what this means? Could someone tell me what is the stock e89 setup? Also the contrast to this? PROS or CONS?

Much appreciated

18X8 - 18" wheel diameter x 8" rim width
35/47ET - This is the front/rear "Positive" offset in millimeters. The stock "positive" offset for the E89 is 29ET/40ET, F/R respectively.
5x120 - 5 holes equally spaced on a 120 mm bolt circle (This is the typical design for BMW)

With the configuration you are proposing - the front wheels would move inboard by 6 mm and the rear wheels would move inboard by 7 mm, relative to the long axis centerline of the car. 6-7 mm is roughly a 1/4".

In contrast to stock offsets when the proposed wheel offset is larger the wheel moves inboard and when the offset is smaller the wheel moves outboard.

Hey,
Thank you so much for your clear response, though would this set up be bad for the car/ride quality?
If so, are there any alternatives to adjust it to the STOCK bmw recommended offset?

Garage List
2012 BMW Z4  [8.50]
Ride quality will depend on the wheel size and tire choice & size.

Offsets can be adjusted via wheel spacers.

Your front wheels will stick out 21 mm(7/8") farther and the rears will stick out 34 mm(1 5/16") farther (At least I think my math is right)

Wrong...

The position of the outside edge of the front RIMS will move out 15 mm. For what concern the rear RIMS: 21 mm or 27 mm, depending if your OEM wheels are 19" or 18".

You are on the limits, aggressive but not ugly.... probably a bit out of the fenders on the rear (3-4 mm aprox).

Remember that the visual effect will also depend strongly on the car heigth (stock suspension or not) and the tires size (more or less stretched).

Could experiment some rubbing on the rear on fast corners or bumby roads .

You're right. I added the 9mm difference to the full 12 mm extra rim, not half and I used a stock 47 mm offset from an above post as the stock rear. My mistake

I have a square set in my e89. The wheels are the 351M. Since the moment I put them, the car feels much less secure than with my previous 293 wheels. Do you think the problem is from the wheels?

Less secure how? These cars have a factory staggered fitment. A wider rear tire gives the rear wheels a bit more traction than the front. If you changed all your tires to the same size, you either increased front traction or decreased rear traction. Both lead to oversteer and may make the rear wheels feel loose. Also, if you changed the offset, it may affect handling. Different tires also drive differently. Could be the width, brand, or type of tire you have.

I have staggered tyres. 235/35/19 front and 255/35/19 rear. Do you think the little difference in offset would make all that difference? The tyres are pirelli pzero Rosso. The cars feels strange on the front wheels. It sways a lot and it feels like it is tramlining...
Any opinion?

Check out the thread "car swaying after changing wheels and tyres". Others are talking about the same problem. Your tire widths should be fine. The only thing that may be an issue is your tires will have a different circumference in those sizes. It may be affecting your ABS sensors and traction control. With your tires turning at different speeds, your car may be sensing a spin or slide and is trying to correct it. It may just be that your new tires are following the contours of the road more than your old ones.

Did you have the alignment checked after new tire installation, by someone who know how to align a BMW (weighted)? Have you had the balance checked, dynamically as in Harmonic? Just because the tires are new doesn't mean thay are not flawed.
