We all want our kids to be better at everything than us. I've always wanted to play baseball, however, I never played little league and when I tried out for my HS team I got cut the first day. I was an average gamer playing the first Nintendo system and ColecoVision, yet he's a boss in PS4. He goes to the gym at least 4 times a week (wife takes him after she gets out of work along with her daughter) and he plays basketball with other kids and socializes, whereas I was always a shy kid growing up. I started liking cars at a very late stage in life at 18, yet he loves cars and tells me how he wants to get an e34 M5 or even my car when he gets older. I was raised in a shell as my parents kept me in a bubble, yet my wife and I let him enjoy life as every kid should have that privilege. Bonus is that he is way better looking than I am

When I was a kid, my parents were approached by Gerber to be on the cereal boxes because I was so cute. They didn't want to "exploit" me EXPLOIT your kid, he will appreciate it later in life!!!

Eventually I joined the ranks of the common folks

haha no, I did joke that when he was a newborn because his skin was really dark, seriously. Doctors said it was the glucose level.

Now I've never been able to figure this one out--my wife and I both have blue eyes, but my son has brown eyes--this doesn't actually compute based on what I remember from 10th grade biology? Just joking

I totally hear you on the bubble thing and I think you're doing a great job based on what you've told us about your son. I think I was in somewhat of a bubble where I must do this and that and am not allowed to fail. Also, the way my parents brought me up is they are not my friend, there is a separation of our levels, I mean a real separation. Like with the sports--they forced me to participate because they knew it was necessary for college on the app. But they didn't see all the other positives that come from it, i.e. participation, skill, etc. And they really had no interest either, it was just that I must participate....I think it's a very cool thing, that we sincerely want our kids to do better than we did, and to somehow experience the things that we did or could not...

Prepare for the shotgun and shovel. My stepdaughter is 17 (known her since she was 5) and she has had a number of boys she was talking to but they don't stick around as she won't give it up.

spare the rod and spoil the child.

I was THANKED in public when my youngest tried to act up in a restaurant and I swatted his behind. He picked up pretty early the idea that "we are in a restaurant, not a playground"

I'm on the fence on that one....leaning towards total political correctness. On the other hand, I've seen my former friend's son who went to the elite prep school and didn't get in to BC. His mom was ok with $75 haircuts (huh, we're talking about a male), bought him special designer food, made his bed, and paid (I have never heard of this maybe you guys can enlighten me) $1,500+ for his prom? I get it, prom is a big deal, here's $75, knock yourself out. Don't tell me times have changed that much....

Our son acts up more than we would like sometimes, but he's exactly 2 1/2....

I just heard that the girl my son hooked up with yesterday won A NEW CAR at her prom this year.

Once the boy is comfortably out of diapers, it's time to start behaving and learning there are consequences for actions.

^^ This x 1,000.

I posted Rudyard Kipling's "If" the other day. It speaks to what being a man (or any responsible adult) is really all about.

hahahahahaha I told my wife a kid should be out at age 18. I'm not talking really about throwing him out by the seat of his pants, I mean if they go to college, they can stay at home during summers. But none of that I'm done with college, moving back home because rent is too high, and then stay from 22-40 with their parents. Now she's always telling my boy daddy says you're out at 18...if she keeps doing that, he'll see me as the bad guy soon....

Just in my lifetime, I've seen my wife's cousin go from 20's to turning 40 next year--NEVER LIVED ON HIS OWN. imho parents can be blamed too for enabling that. If the rent is $2,500/mo. and you can't afford it, well guess what? Move to a place where you can afford the rent.
