N55 Engine?

So I was trolling the BMWUSA site and saw that they are saying the Z4 35i's engine has "TwinPower Turbo Technology" which is their marketing slogan for the N55 engine. Are they equipping this model with the N55 engine? That's news to me. I thought they retained the N54 in the 35i and 35is. I couldn't find any answers by Googling. Anyone know the answer to this?

No, the previous 35i and 35is both had the twin turbo engines.

That is correct, no N55 for Z4. I found the slogan confusing, too. The N54 is actually twin turbo charged, the N55 has a single turbo but with twin scroll (calling it TwinPower Turbo)

Right, that's why I wasn't sure why they used the TwinPower Turbo slogan. I'm wondering if they changed engines for 2012.

I believe the 35i switched to the N55 engine in 2011. The 35is retained the N54.

They use TwinPower turbo in their description of the 35is engine also.

I just looked into this. There hasn't been an engine change for the 35i, but they retroactively apply the TwinPower Turbo moniker to all turbo charged N54 and 55.

If you are into tuning, the N54 is the better choice - more potential....

Thanks for the clarification. Where'd you find this info?

I was asking about the MY 2012 since that's what they're showing on the BMW website. I know the 2011 had the N54 because I owned one.

The 2012 Z4 35i and 35is still use the twin turbo N54 engine. Still the same as 2011.
Look at the 2012 catalog, pages 13 and 39, where they discuss engines. Twin-scroll for the 20i and 28i, two turbos for the 35i and 35is.

I think what Stoof and I were both trying to say is the year models 2011 engine remains unchanged for 2012, twin turbos for the 35i and 35is.....

And I reckon the N54 is the engine of choice vs the N55 - the N54 benefits from a stronger, forged crank plus Mahle pistons. I read the N55 has turkish made pistons and a cast crank so it can't support as much power (so a tuning company has stated).

+1 That's my understanding as well.
