Grinding Noise with Nav Screen
Hi,
My Nav Screen has developed a grinding noise when it opens and closes. Has anyone else had this issue? Dealer said it would cost $3,000 to replace the motor that opens/closes the screen. That seems insane. Looking for any guidance available from you kind folk. Thanks. |

WD40 is not a lubricant. It is suitable for removing stickers, tar and loosing rusty bolts etc. Anyway, I wouldnt spray anything back there without knowing what I was aiming at. I assume the noise is there due to dust and dirt accummulating over time somewhere inside. It is a convertible after all. WD40 attracts dust so I wouldnt use that.

Try a dry lube spray like s Teflon spray. Goes on wet, dried to a powder in seconds.

WD40 is basically a water dispersant. Similar to a petrol and light oil mixture.
Wouldn't like to spray it on plastic. If you look at the gap to the right of the display you will see the gears. I sprayed some silicon on there when it rattled. In fact every joint in the car gets a dose regularly. Of course you have got to ask yourself who would have designed this screen with exposed gears? Why are they not sealed away inside the unit clear of any potential dust or grit falling on the gears. Especially with an open top car. Their solution seems to be, to have large clearances around the gear teeth, so the whole lot rattles. |

Doesn't silicon eat away at rubber? Not sure if that's what you meant by "joint" but, my understanding is that silicon on rubber things (like the door/window seals on a 3 series) is not a great idea because it will cause issues in the long run
