I want the next Z...Or should I? (Buying Journal)

Hi, I new to the ZPost (I hang around the M3Post most of the time), so if this is a repost, sorry.

Okay, so here's the deal. In 2005, I got a Z4 3.0i. I like the way it drives, and there's no aspect of that car that I do not like. With 3 other cars in my garage, the Z is dedicated for recreation only - you know, weekend road slicing and stuff.

9 months ago, I decided to move on and make room make room in my garage for my comming E92 M3. I sold my Z - big mistake. Since my Z left me, it grew on me. It is by no means the fastest or the hottest car I own or has ever driven. But somehow I miss it - a lot. Perhaps it is the long hood or perhaps it is the non-existence of the "+2" dog seats, my E93 vert just don't cut it.

Last night, I've decided that I must add a roadster to my fleet, and with my previous great relationship with the Z, its 2010 replacement is one of the top candidates. Thus, I'm posting this thread for you to help me choose. Should I go for it or should I get something else?

Here's is what I need:
  1. A two seater with the "correct" traditional roadster proportions (you know, the long bonnet and short over hangs).
  2. Needless to say that it must be a convertible (soft/hard top I don't care).
  3. I don't have to buy now, I can wait as long as it is worth it (the Z definately is).
  4. Looks isn't everything, I am in it for a good driving experience. No, I don't need massive power. Don't get me wrong, power is a good thing, but I'll take a well sorted chassie over that any day.
  5. I'm no millionare, something like the Merc SL, baby lambo, or the Aston V8, is probably out of my league. The Current Z4M or boxter S money fits my budget way better. I'm willing to go a bit beyond, but the extra spendings must be justified.

Does the comming Z fit my bill? Is there something else that I sould consider? I'm now only in the process of research, so links are welcomed! Keep in mind that I do have other cars. You can look at my signature for a list of cars that I am driving or have driven.

I'm also going to keep a journal regarding this decision until I take delivery. I'll try and update daily and keep you posted on what I saw, read, and tested. Before I make any decision (color, options, etc...) I'll run it by you guys. Throw in a few more choices and I will set up a poll for my final decision. The people on this thread WILL decide what car I get! Here is a thank you in advance for all your help.

Personally, I'd get a CPO '07 merc sl, which will run you about 60k. Definitely not as nimble as the Z, but drives like a dream, and you feel like the kind of the road.

But that'll mean that I'm spending more on a CPO than I would have on a new car. I'm not sure that I want to go there. I've never got anything second hand and always seem to worry that the previous owner did smth bad to the car. I know that's irrational, but I lnow that it'll bug me.

I am not sure why you have an E93... according to me its the weakest link in the 3 series family. If I were you, I would sell the E93, and add money to that pool and buy a car that you will enjoy. Consider the new 911 carrera? with 30mpg to the gallon, its the perfect case of having your cake and eating it too

E93 is my Wifey Wagon... hence the baby blue. The style ain't too bad, it is a bimmer, and grocery fits in the back seat. It works for us, and that's why it's a keeper. The Merc is our "nice car" that we drive to dinners and important meetings with. The M3 is my multipurpose car. It shares the role of a daily driver with the E93 (only ocasionally) and when I find the right road, I do like pushing it.

Lotus Elise... It'll be better in every way then your Z4 except for comfort. They're pretty exclusive, their style will last for YEARS, their mileage is amazing, and their performance is legendary. Otherwise, a Porsche BoxterS would be a nice alternative.

You mention how you had an 2 BMW's and a Merc in your stable, why add another BMW? It's like being married to 2 blonds, you might as well be a little adventurous and throw a brunette into the mix. (The BMW's are like Playboy playmates, and the Lotus would be more along the lines of a hot gymnast. ) Not quite sure if that analogy fits, but I like it.

Good call on the Lotus, I'll keep it in mind. The boxter, however, is not my cup of tea. I know it's a porsche, but the looks just drove me away.

I was only thinking another bimmer because I owned its previous model and liked it. It just a starting point for me. That's why I'm posting this thread to get some ideas.

Options so far:
  1. The comming 2010 Z4
  2. A Lotus (More information welcomed... I know very little about them)
  3. ??????????
  4. ??????????
  5. .....
  6. .....
  7. .....

Feel free to add to the list....

I don't know if you want to stay German, but an S2000 is a great car to have, and if you want a car to just throw around, that would be most definitely be on many people's lists.

Well, I did considered the S2000, but it is an old car... very old. Honda wise, the comming NSX is a bit too pricy. I don't have to stick with the germans, but I can't think of any other makes that fit my bill. I don't see many Japanese roadsters around. The only ones that I can think of is the S2000, which is too old, and the MX-5, which is... I don't mean anything bad... but it is a bit low-ended to compare with what I am looking at. The Italians makes some awesome cars, I love them all but can afford none. I don't want to finance my cars... I pay cash for all my cars and will only spend what I can spare. The brits... MrSteak mentioned lotus, and I like that idea... I can't think of anything else. Feel free to throw in more alternatives. Just remember, I want to spend around Z4M money.

This picture does add the boxter S into the list. Maybe the photographer has caught the porsche in the best light, I don't know, but this surely looks way better than the current models.

Since the current model has been around for a while, I'm assuming that you mean the comming model. Mercs always make cars that are too soft, but hopefully the AMG version will make things more exciting. The only problem is I like 6MT. This is after all a car purchased to give me a fun driving experience. I actually want to "drive" the car.

Options so far:
  1. The comming 2010 Z4
  2. A Lotus (More information welcomed... I know very little about them)
  3. 2010 Boxter S (provided that the looks improve significantly)
  4. Maybe the new SLK... AMG with 6MT prefered

Nope, I got it else where. In other markets, they even made a 318i and 320i.

Why not a Nissan? I read that the next 350Z or 370Z will weigh around 3000 pounds and will produce 350hp.......I must say, 3000 pounds is quite low!

I've had experience with nissan/infinities before, but so far, none of them had impress me enough to cajole my check book out of my pocket. I don't think the new 370z will chaange that.
