Throttle reset
Does pumping the throttle on a manual 5 times with the ignition on, reset the eng, management, to give better throttle response.
Seems to have done so on my car, so much so i don't have to use the sport+ so often. In the UK the Rover MGTF eng. mang. could be reset doing this, seeing that BMW and Rovers paths passed at some point. Or is this just an industry standard. |

Yesterday I learned about the money shift for the first time, and today I learned about the virgin reset:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=321049 What a week! It seems you need to hold down the gas pedal for 5 secs with the ignition on but engine off, and then wait two minutes without touching anything. Another post said that if you hold down the pedal for 10 secs the water pump starts, and that this is a step used after a coolant flush... Anyway that was just taken from the E9x forum, and who knows what works on the E89. Maybe it was never a virgin... |

Is the rationale for the benefit that it removes "learned" gentle driving?
If that is the case, no need for me to reset anything because my car has not had an opportunity learn any bad habits |

This does work, i was told by a tech that when he gets a car throttle response question all he does is this procedure and gives them back the car and the client is happy. He told me if i ever feel like it is sluggish jsut romp on it a few times and it will improve.

The reason i tried this is since i purchased the car secondhand from a BMW dealer, the car has always felt a bit lacking in normal mode, a bit flat on acceleration. Obviously have no idea how it was treated by the previous owner. So tried this procedure and it has made a difference. My car is a 23i so you guys in the states that can afford to run the bigger cars wouldn't appreciate the bit more poke we can get from the 200hp car

In the e38 world, we would just undo the battery connectors and hook them together for >1 hr. This would reset all of the adaptive values, for the throttle and the transmission.

I just tried this on my 2011 Z4, and I'm one of the folks that THINKS it made a difference, although I haven't ruled out the placebo effect. But the throttle response definitely feels different, and that's what I want to believe :-)
BTW, there are conflicing procedures if you follow all the links. Some say to just press the accelerator for five seconds. Others say to press it for at least 25 seconds. Some say to press the START button one time. Others say to press it TWICE until all the lights turn on, etc. In short, I've tried them all to be safe, so if ANY of them worked, I'm sure I applied it. Some of the posters say that if you listen carefully, you should be able to hear the tranny resetting itself (after about 25 seconds). I have never been able to hear anything, though. Let me know what others think. |

Only way to reset is with a BT cable hooked to your laptop. There is an option in the software to reset the throttle amongst many other things. Even the DCT transmission learning. (BT = Bavarian Techniq).

This definitely works.
I got a loaner car, and it was quite sluggish to respond. Even in sports mode, when I WOT it would not respond for a good 1-2 seconds. I was telling my brother this yesterday, as he is looking to get into a new car and doesn't know much about them. My explanation to him was that the 28i engine had some severe turbo lag. It didn't occur to me it was user learned behavior, probably from all the people who don't go bat-shit crazy with their loaners . Anyway, I just remembered this "trick" today, and tried it before using the car. Wow, did everything change! There is still a good .5-1 second lag compared to my Z, but the improvement is significant... so was my new gas consumption. Will definitely do this once I get my car back. Been grannying the car cause of the winter weather when I got it. |

I used the "30 second" method.
Click Engine On/Off without foot on throttle or brakes One all the lights come on, press the throttle all the way down for 30 seconds After 30 seconds, I clicked the Engine On/Off with my foot still on the pedal until everything turned off (all the lights) Then I waited 2 minutes (used my phone) and started the car like normal I really don't think this is the placebo effect, as I have read about it so I made sure to do some "tests" to confirm. First of all, right off the bat the car did rev a lot higher before changing gears. Almost like the car didn't know what gear to choose so it just kept revving (this was in normal mode, not sport, and normal driving throttle pressure). That was my first clue it worked. Secondly, I make sure to WOT while going at varying local speeds (30-40 MPH) and highway speeds (60-70 MPH) to eliminate the possibility of speed effecting responsiveness, since I don't remember exactly at what speeds I floored it when I was showing my brother. Due to the fact that before it was really severely delayed, the difference was obviously noticeable, making me believe that it indeed did reset the behavior and not just the placebo effect. Whether or not it was just the throttle response, transmission, or both, I can't say for sure. But responsiveness was increased overall. This was on a 28i though, so that means Sport Automatic. Not sure if this trick can be applied to the 35i DCTs. Will try when I get my car back. |
