Z4's Multi-Function Rear View Mirror Replacement

Has anyone ever replaced their standard (non-premium package) rear view mirror yet? I just got a replacement with the multi-function features and would like to DIY if not too complex. Otherwise I have to make an appointment for the stealership to take $$$ to install.

I've searched around but couldn't find anything, but if anyone has done it before or found a DIY, please post. Thanks!

Gotcha.

I really don't think there's any issue at all replacing the auto-dimming or one with a compass with the multifunction one, since those already have a power lead.

It might be a different issue if there's not already power to the mirror.

As you might discern from my tagline, I'm the sort of person who'll typically have my dealer do this sort of thing. A mirror should be pretty simple, though.

So I figured out how to replace it myself. New mirror is on and cable is connected, but all I get is the alarm led light coming on when I arm the car. It seems there is no power to the home link. When I press any of the home link buttons, the led does not light up. Not sure if it has a separate fuse to activate it. I will consult the manual, if not, I will just stop by the stealership to have them check it. They may do it under warranty since I have it already installed and think it just went out?

I did the same with my '06 X3. I had no issues with getting the Homelink to work but had to do donuts in the culdesac to get the compass to acclimate. I don't remember specifics but did you note whether any electrical connections had all of their leads?

There was only 1 connector to the mirror. I think it may need a fuse, only if I could locate the fuse box in this car. The mercedes, it was easily accessible in the trunk.

flpnout, the fuse box is located under the glove box (passenger side). There are 3 screws that you will need to undo. You will need to lay down under the glove box, you will see a greyed color lock, undo that by a 1/2 turn to the left or right, and you will get access to the fuse box.. Yes, not as simple as on an E9X... Strange enough...

Thanks for the info Land Shark, I saw the three screws you are talking about. I will give it a try sometime this week.

I've never seen this "multifunction" mirror, and am a little intrigued. Can somebody give me more details on it? Specifically, what does it offer over the standard mirror?

1) The normal one may or may not have the alarm on it.

2) The multifunction one has the alarm, the compass and the garage door opener build into it.

Hope this helps

PS. I asked my SA if it is possible to change my standard one out for the multifunction mirror he said no ... so I am still interested if it is possible to do or not (at the moment my old garage door opener lives in my ashtray).

Same here - we dont seem to get the compass in Australian cars.
Perhaps we dont need to be told where to go?

we have the same road system like you folks up here in Canada east to west so no need for the compass I guess is what my German deep thinkers are thinking.

I don't have much time to mess with it. I have it installed, but I am bringing it in to have the stealership figure it out. Not sure if it is programming or fuse issue. I was told by parts that it is definitely compatible.

My car came with the huge clown nose (boo! My wife's X3 has a much less-obtrusive one) and universal garage door buttons. It's auto-dimming, and the rain sensor lives in its mount and peers out through the windshield.

It does not have a compass, but since I have a nav system that gives me the same orientation data along with far more, that doesn't seem like much of a loss.

My iPhone has a great compass and my old garage door opener lives/fits nicely in my ashtray (no need for anything else since I stopped smoking many years ago so as they say all is good). As for the Navigation, my TomTom serves me well here in North America and Europe when I need it.

I'm still trying to figure out why US cars don't come standard with them?!? What's premium about a garage opener and a compass?
