It was a VERY long day, and a remarkably ironic/funny/coincidence story between the two dealers. I'll have to write up a full report tomorrow or Saturday.

The ticking sound was definitely there in person upon cold start -- but not as tinny as it is in the video.. and it was much less reduced once warmed up after a test drive, but still there.

Thanks for everyone's answers to all my noob questions!

But I have one super important question I haven't been able to figure out -- Where in the heck can you plug in a radar detector??? I could only find one socket in the armrest, and that's not going to work.
Congrats Henry, very glad you made the decision! I'll bet you are one excited guy
I took my 35i out for a nice drive today, top down of course as we are talking about sunny So Calif, and really enjoyed it. You will too! And when up against my garage wall I heard a light tick too. Warmed up, was gone. Enjoy the great car and stop worrying! As for the 12V socket, as far as I know, the armrest compartment is it. Unless you add another. I also look forward to your story. Should be, well, interesting. Have fun and be safe with your great ride!

There is a second 12V outlet in the passenger footwell, under the glove box.

My SLK350 has (had, he he) one there too, and I looked all over for one in the Z4 and couldn't find it. But that was at night, leaning over from the driver's seat feeling around for one. I'll have to get under there today to find it. Thanks.

Video post #11

I paid attention to the trim on the dash of the car featured in the video. I have a car on order with the silver matte trim. The trim in the video is not silver matte nor does it appear to be the brushed aluminum. This not a North American car so maybe there are different trim options than what I can choose from. Anybody know? I was going to stop by the dealer today and look again at the two trim options but after looking at the video again, I don't thin the trim in the video is either silver matte or brushed aluminum. Thanks for any information you can share.

This is a 2010 car, so the options are different now than was available then. This car as the Ivory White Napa Leather interior option which had the Anthracite Wood Trim. This option was dropped in 2012.

p.s. I know which BMW NA dealer where this car was bought new, and I have all the paperwork, so I know it's a North America model.

In the U.S., the 28i/30i has "silver matte trim" which is flat, aluminum-color painted metal and/or plastic.
The 35i has "real" brushed aluminum trim (optional for 28i, 30i & 35is)
The 35is has "Aluminum Carbon Shadow" which has a carbon fiber-like weave to it.

There is also a wood option available in all models.

The first video showed wood trim, the second Aluminum Carbon Shadow trim.

Thank You cdeslandes. Your response was just what I wanted to know. Of course I like the carbon shadow trim the best but since I have ordered a 28i it is not avaliable. Thanks for taking the time to provide the information I was looking for. This is what makes the forum great.

You're welcome. You can probably order the carbon trim later, of course BMW will charge you an arm and a leg for the privilege...

I will look into ordering the trim later, but I'll bet you are right about the price. I may go ahead and talk to the parts department now so I know the cost. It may not be possible to change it as the silver matte looks like it is part of the whole dashboard assembly.
