Out of curiosity, what can a (assumingly) state of the art $6,000 system not do that a Dropcam can?

I just have never had the need for an alarm system...this sign usually works just perfectly...we had our neighbourhood burglarized and they robbed both my neighbours. Skipped our house.

The police told me afterwards that my dog's barking was probably a reason one of the neighbours called the cops as they usually never bark insanely. Here is the crackhead getting owned by a police dog.

I'd like to know as well. As an anecdotal reference, one of my neighbors has the ADT camera system installed. He said it's totally useless for him even after he upgraded his ISP service at the suggestion of ADT. He said the delay between the actual real time event and when he sees it is totally unacceptable. He said he tested it with him in front of the camera moving and the delay was unbearable for him.

I showed him my Hikvision setup and he was amazed at the clarity and performance of the system. He thought it was professionally installed as he saw someone at the front of my house mounting the camera. I told him the person he saw installing it was me.

Another thing nice about owning your own system is you have total control over your video footage and you're not held hostage to not being able to work on the system on your own or any price hikes. If I want to upgrade or install a new camera, I don't need to have a service call by them and be charged accordingly.

Very simple, get your self some Dahua POE cams with a Dahua POE NVR and you're golden. I have this setup in my own home and i re-sell + install these. They are really good systems and the cameras are well constructed. The management software is easy to use and not hard to configure at all.

Might have gotten over my skis on that last comment. That said, from my desktop or iphone I can circle any object or area and get a push notification whenever it moves. I believe I can do 90% of what he can do at less than 5% of the price. Just a shame that Nest hasn't come out with an outdoor option yet. You would the the minds at Google could get that going in a month or two.

NAS Based security systems aren't as reliable in my opinion. It's best to have a proprietary recorder to host all the footage rather than having it share storage with your files etc. Also having to pay for licenses to add more cameras sucks.

I like it I have had no issue with it, that being said I am not a security freak or anything so yeah it's not in a safe buried in the basement on a backup generator or anything like that. However for a free solution it works great for me (needed nas for storage anyways and only have 2 cams right now so).

Are you guys putting cameras without an actual security system?

Do some of these cameras have battery back up or something in case someone gets into your fuse box and kills your power.

I have ADT. I bought and installed the security/IP cameras.

As far as battery backup, I have two APC 1500VA/865W UPS' powering my network wall rack which has my PoE switch in it. If I wanted even more extended run time, I could either add an external battery pack to those UPS' or move the PoE switch to my main server rack which has a 3750W UPS powering it. But none of this is actually all that relevant as I have a 20kW Generac backup generator for the house.
