ED - a p.i.t.a. ... anyone tried a swap to servo?
Am I the only one, who gets annoyed by a complete numbness of ED (electric steering) our Zets were born with?
Anyone anywhere heard/read about a swap to classic hydraulic (servo) steering from e90/91 lineup? My daily - 330ix e91 MY2011 - fortunatelly has a servo and the feel (for what is actually happening underneath the front rubbers) is simply overwhelming.....

Before you do anything drastic, how about taking your car to see if there is later software that can be reflashed? Steering software has gotten better over the years

replace front tension arms with parts from e9x M3 and change bushings to Rogue Engineering version... night and day difference. The EPS system in the E89 is actually really good compared to previous generations.

btw I do not like the steering feel in sport and normal much, but one thing I do notice is that tire pressure and toe adjustments can still be felt, and impact the overall feel in all modes. I am sure that downgrading to less comfortable / more sporty E9x M suspension links, like suggested above, can be felt as well. |

Well, the ///M tension arms and RogueEng. bushings are already high on a list of mods to be done next winter...
Gotta admit that most of my driving time the BC reads "sport", I am a bit afraid (of myself ) driving prolonged periods of time with my guardian angel (read: DSC) turned off. So, next time I am switching into "Sport+" I will try to feel the difference... Thanks.

As someone that drives both a stock Z4 35i and an E92 M3 with aluminum, sealed monoballs in the front tension arms, I can tell you the steering in the E92 M3 is far superior, but the Z4 35i is not bad for a stock electronic car. Not by any means. Assuming they will fit, my plan is to throw the Rogue bushings that I never put in the M3 into the Z4 to see what that feels like. As I continue to replace arms on the M3, I may consider moving them over to the Z4. Heck, if the Z4 did not have an electronic rear parking brake, it would already have the OEM brakes from the E92 M3! |

Well, did not forget to flip the selector between "sport" and "sport+" forth and back several times, but felt no difference in steering quality/responsiveness at all. Either my Zet of early series - fabricated May 2009 - has the same steering settings for both "sporty" modes or I am less sensitive driver than asbjorn...

Anyway, another solution is selling the 3 series and get a 5 series with variable eps steering instead. Then you will love the sporty non variable eps of the Z4 haha. |

Well, today I took a liberty to make myself a day off .... selected sport+ first thing in the morning and rode into the dawn .... 499.4 kilometers snaked.... you were right, the steering feel of sport+ seems to be slightly more convenient compared to "ordinary" sport mode.... thanks for hinting me....

PS Unless it is raining I usually just use DSC=off (not DTC traction) to get the sport+ steering feel without the aggressive DCT and throttle behaviour |
