Dinan v Stock Tuning

Well since I'm new to BMW's and am learning which engine numbers fit different chassis, horsepower ratings, etc., I did some analysis in Excel, comparing the 3 different engines for the e89 Z4.

With help from some folks here I found the wiki for the N52N25 and N52B30 and stumbled across a Dinan press release, and made a chart for myself to analyze the data. Well, it turned out soo puurdy, I thought I'd share it!

Most of you likely have seen this data already, but it may be of interest to others - FWIW. I have to admit, the Dinan data is pretty cool, but I feel a little robbed because, according to the wiki, the 7 series n54 produces more horsepower. The good news is, according to Dinan's dyno the stock n54 actually peaks at 332 hp.

The link for the Dinan press release is below. Note that FWHP means flywheel HP. The rear wheel hp is shown in Dinan's press release. All info is in US units. The 2007 press release is for the 335i, and I'm not aware of a Dinan tune for the e89 Z4, yet. I hear he's working on it though.

N52B25 - 23i (204 hp) & N52B30 - 30i (258 hp)

I have called Dinan a couple of times, but still no ETA on when their flash will be available for the Z4 35i. GIAC released their flash for the N54, but nothing specifically for the Z4. I am concerned that GIAC's software may interfere with active suspension/steering/throttle sensitivity settings that are unique to the Z4 so I have held off for now. I had the Dinan flash on my 335 coupe and it totally transformed the car. They are a little pricey but worth the money IMHO.

Issue in E89 s35i is torque rating of the DCT. Manual can handle a Dinan Stage One tune, but DCT is rated at around 375 lb-ft and would be over-torqued with Stage One. Stage Two: in the ball park.

Dunno what Dinan will do with this or when, but they say they're working on it. Stay tuned... (LOL)
