BMWNA Field Rep Inspection

Some of you may have read about my problems with delivery to my dealer here in the US from our awesome European delivery trip in August - the Z4 was damaged during shipment (paint, front spoiler, rear view mirror, etc.). Now, after my call to BMWNA on Friday, they are sending out a "field rep" for inspection of the vehicle. Does anyone have any experience with this process? Thanks.

I've seen these people one or twice visiting my own dealers. I would take the view that they are there to sort out your issues in the most efficient way possible. I don't think they will simply take the word of the dealer, but will advise the dealer on how things should proceed. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

My experience on a seat belt warning light with the factory reps on a 2007 335i cab was not a good one at all !! Good luck to you !!

How well can you document the car was damaged in shipment?

It is documented by the dealer and I have a copy of the print out showing the reported damage in port and at delivery (this is BMW's own tracking system software - surely there will be no dispute on this issue). I will keep my fingers crossed and let you guys know what happens.

From my experience on my lemon 330cic that kept stalling sporadically, they sent out a BMWNA Field rep to inspect the problem and stated he could not replicate it since it was sporadic. When I took it to another dealership they documented that it was a "software issue" and "no new release was out yet to fix it". After I got that documentation, I gave it to my attorney who had a lemon law attorney handle it and BMW had to refund back all the money (monthly, down, and window tinting I spent on the vehicle). I had my attorney bill BMW for the fees. Sometimes the reps are useless until you mention "lemon law attorney". BMW does not like having "lemon" associated with their vehicles. When they took the car back, BMW called it a "Buy Back" not a "lemon".

In this case, its a documented absolute issue. Plus its easy to argue non-use of the vehicle. Unless you feel that a satisfactory resolution is in hand (and very near), you'd have a very strong case for a buy back.

You need to decide whether you'd be happy with one off the lot if they want to negotiate a trade. That does insure a good vehicle and gets you one without waiting.

At this point, I'd definitely go for that route.

You've got a good case so don't even worry about it. BMW has to deal with you to make it right.

I agree with Richard that you should focus on trading the car, accepting a buy-back, etc. In my experience trying to get them to repair it is never truly satisfactory in the end.

BMW will likely get some money from the shipping company, particularly if it has have significant repairs or if it's a wright off. Let them deal with the anguish or lost of time/funds to make it right.

I will push for a straight up - my wrecked car for the exact same new car; this is my preference. We wouldn't change a thing about my wife's new Z4 except that we would like it to be new instead of dameged from the factory during shipment.
