Filling up drives me crazy

Every time I fill up the Z4 it takes forever because the fuel dispenser pump keeps cutting out, probably because of fuel splash back. The only way I've managed to actually put fuel in without the hand pump tripping is to insert fuel really slowly. I've tried pointing the fuel dispenser nozzle towards the back and towards the front but no difference.

Is it just me or do other have the same problem?

Some times I do have that problem but most of the times I don't. I don't recall anything I do/did to help.

I was having the same trouble filling it up the first few times, until I figured out how not to trip the pump cutoff. I used to insert the nozzle all the way in the tank, but now I only put the nozzle end just an inch past the little tank flap. That's it. No more problems. Once it clicks the first time, it's full. Now, this is/was only an issue here in Canada. The hand pumps here are bare metal. With some pumps in the US which have a plastic wrapper sleeve where only the nozzle end sticks out, this was never a problem.

Not to the extent you do. Mine clicks off 1 or 2 gallons short of empty; I then hold the handle about halfway down till full.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

@durih: The pumps here in the UK are also covered with a plastic sleeve (must be painful for you guys filling up in the winter months!).

And just like you, I insert the nozzle all the way in. Will try your method next time (which at the rate the car drinks fuel, won't be long) and report back.

I was the first of very few with this issue in Germany - replacement of the complete fuel tank did not do the job, but as a final effort, they just replaced the fuel ventilation and its filtre and now all problems have gone.

There should be a "PUMA" as my dealer had to report everything to Munich...

Best regards

Mick

Edit: Workaround: Turn the nozzle by 180° - this worked for me at least on 50% of the gas stations.

I agree, it should be at least a 16 gallon tank.

Fuel filling

YES........identical problem....click,click, click bl**dy click.

BUT.......

If you do ease back on the handle and get a nice steady flow, sometinmes the auto cut-off on the hose won't work. The next thing, you've got a shoe-full of petrol! Absolute pain.

And yes, it takes an age to get the last gallon in.......

Some US pumps have a 'suction' device to suck away noxious gasses (deemed to be carcinogenic), with these perhaps the filling process is easier???

I had this same problem on my previous E85 M Roadster. I use to think it was the gas pump that was causing this grief, as it was a sporadic issue. But yes it use to also drive me nuts when it kept clicking off. Then there were times when the gas would just keep flowing out (embarrassing when that happens).

So far I have not had this problem on my current E89 (knocks on wood).

Finally filled up yesterday evening (been using the company car) and can confirm that if you pull the nozzel out halfway, it fills up with no problems.

I used a different petrol station (one near work) so it could also be down to different flow rate and pump nozzel but certainly at this petrol station (Esso) didn't have the problem with the nozzel half out.

Pushed the nozzel all the way in as a test and sure enough in the infamous words of Z Victor1 "click, click, click, bl**dy click".
