It's all recorded in the ECU. you'd have to get a bmw service tech to read that for you.

I saw it when I was at the dealer last time. I think you can only get the info if you use BMWs diagnosis equipment. I also saw that the car had logged the fact that I had been trying to write to the KOMBI hardware to adjust the speedo to show true km/h...

Now I feel pretty sure it logs when I upload "new" versions of the ECU software as well (such as when I switch between the OEM and ESS flash).

How does ESS work? Does it just flash the tables or is it like Cobb where it does a complete copy of the stock ECU and writes it back during uninstall

These are the files I use. The last file is a complete copy of the stock ECU. The 101 and 102 files are the stage 1 (355hp) and stage 2 (390-400hp) tunes. It takes 1 hour to download the stock ECU, and 12-15mins to upload a tune. Uninstalling is the same as re-uploading the stock ECU. Everything is done using a laptop, a USB to OBD2 cable and a piece of ESS software.

and though the complete copy of stock ECU is re-used there is still a counter of the re-flashing?

I'm curious on how sure you are b/c I was chatting with a cobb rep and they were saying all "counters" in the ECU are included in the copy

Wonder if it is an ESS vs. cobb difference or ???

No, I am not 100% sure, because I never saw such a code. What I meant was, if they can log coding, which I saw, then I would be pretty surprised if the don't log flashing as well. I could very well be wrong though.

But even if they can see that the ecu has been flashed, what can they do anyway? I do not think it is like it would know which flash is the ess one anyway.
