After 2 ticks above half I notice power reduction and 5 ticks above half car feels non turbo. This is pretty much inline with what the pdfs posted somewhere on this site say to expect.

EDIT: "spirited" driving gets you 1/2.. are you sure it is spirited ? (j/k)
Yes, spiritedly for me lol...I've admitted only been at 4/10th maybe? The cops here are overzealous, anything 50kph(31mph) over the limit means car impounding and licence suspension, plus the subsequent LARGE insurance hit.

..but it's still 'safe' to be 5 ticks above as long as you rest the car afterwards?

I think its ok because there is "component protection" if the oil or coolant gets too hot

110-120c is "normal" for these cars, but in reality its a very hot oil temperature.

Ideally, temps should be 95c for the naturally aspirated engines and 110c for the turbos. anything past this is hot.

I read somewhere that you must change your oil within 5000KM if you run oil temps between 110-125c.

if they reach 130c (our engines are often near this figure) an immediate change is required.

to help deal with high oil temps, consider removing your plastic engine cover during hot weather and using a good quality 5w40 weight oil like motul, liquimoly, or rotella t6.

modern BMW's run hot for fuel economy and emission purposes. its not "normal" and it isnt good for your motor.
