New Orleans

I was thinking of rolling to New Orleans as a break in for my car. What is there to do for a night or two?

Plenty to do! What are you looking for, food, music? Unless you're 21 and looking for that Spring Break kind of experience, stay away from the Quarter...

Went once, no need to go again... Rather see other stuff in Louisiana.

Depends on how much you like food and drink. Other than that, it's not worth much and it's definitely not safe but Houston isn't too safe in the 5th ward either. Think upscale navigation district if you know what I mean.

How about driving to Big Bend? Talk about a nice way to break your car in and see some nice nature. Stay in Lajitas or Alpine...

While I understand everyone is entitled to their opinion I can only imagine that those of you who did not find things to like in N.O. did not venture much beyond the French Quarter. Yes, the FQ is dirty and filled with a bunch of drunk college kids these days. There is a reason that locals don't go to the FQ...

There is plenty to do in N.O. beyond the FQ including many great art museums and galleries, many historical sights and lots of great old architecture. And of course plenty of great food and music.

Dodging bullets on Bourbon St is the newest craze I hear. Sort of like the running of the bulls.

Can't deny that, a terrible thing.... But not a common occurrence. Crime happens in all cities and this incident was in a popular area frequented by tourists. Not good, but again not a common occurrence.

Happens in other places as well... Austin TX, shooting on sixth street back in Feb.

Don't get me wrong, we have our issues like many cities do. Hell, look at the recent death toll and injury stats for Chicago!

Sixth Street is getting worse and worse with age, no doubt. It's still not as bad as Bourbon Steet and it's a whole lot longer so you can stay away from the bad end if you choose.

And you can (and should!) stay away from Bourbon Street! Just as there is a lot more to Austin than Sixth Street, there is a whole lot more to New Orleans than Bourbon Street...

There is more to the FQ than Bourbon Street and the food is great. I haven't been since before Katrina but I have heard it's not recovered completely.

The biggest reason I would advise against going there in the new M is Louisiana speed traps and the 65mph speed limit on I10 are a real drag. Going to Big Bend might be a lot more fun because in Texas, the speed limit on I 10 is 80 west of SA and you can go lot's faster if you have a Passport.

Just poking fun about Bourbon St. Chicago certainly has its problems too, but they're easy to avoid by staying away from the south side. The river/Wacker Drive/Michigan Ave area is fine.

Well I can tell you that what you've heard is wrong. Any area you would visit in the city as a tourist was either untouched by Katrina or has fully recovered. Are there parts of the city that have not fully recovered, yes. But you'd have to go looking for those parts, you're not going to stumble into them as a tourist unless you take one of the "disaster tours" that will take you there.

Again, more misinformation. I10 has been 70 mph for years now. Yes, there are short stretches through Lake Charles and other urban areas that drop to 60 or 65 but you have the same thing in east Texas as you head into Houston. There is a long stretch of 60mph long before you arrive in Houston and there state troopers constantly working it. I know because my parents live in Houston and I make that drive all the time... Speed traps are everywhere, not just in Louisiana

I know! And it is easy to visit New Orleans and stay away from Bourbon Street and other high crime areas...

That's on 6th and Red River. Anyone with half a brain (unless you're into ghetto trash) would never venture east of Congress. That's why they call it dirty sixth. All the good spots are west of Congress.

I get that. And anyone with half a brain stays away from Bourbon Street, all parts of it! If that is all you've seen of N.O., then I can understand why you did not like it

Fair enough, I assumed that based on your comments. Nothing wrong with that as many folks come in for business or a convention and stay in or near the FQ so that is all they see. I love Austin but if I flew in and spent all my time on Sixth Street, I would likely visit once and never go back there as well...

LOLOLOL!!!!

OK, take it easy there. I give the food a 10 and to me it's worth it for that but to be fair, I10 east of Houston really does suck. You have to drive over the causeway for a lot of miles and I don't know what the traffic is like there but I can't imagine it's dropped so my bet is that 70mph is optimistic. The speed limit east of Baytown is up to 75 now in Texas so that is a plus.
