DCT gearbox stuck at second gear!!

Hello,

yesterday i was racing the old M5, the 440hp i had the setup sport + and gear in manual. The gear was in 2nd and when it reached close to redline i felt that it got stuck on something and it didnt change to 3rd.

I had to slow down as the gear didnt want to change automatically, i returned the car in D and normal mode and everything went back smooth.

I raced him again from 40kmh and i was ahead :P

but am not sure what happened there.

Were you in launch control? If so, then it should have shifted.

You can't beat a good old manual transmission! I believe some of these new double clutch systems can get confused/cause problems. Have it checked out by the dealer if it happens again.

Your thought that a manual transmission can't be beat is your opinion, and you are entitle to that, but it is still early to jump to the conclusion you drew. It may just be that they thought they were in Launch Control, but they weren't. Launch control will not work if the DCT is set to manual.

Correction: Launch Control ONLY works when manual mode is engaged. See owner's manual on Launch Control, Step 3.

DCT vs Manual performance is documented as to which has better acceleration. So it all comes down to preference.

If there is a problem that occurred your car may have thrown an error code that your dealer would see when it goes in for service.

Same happened to me in my 335i Dinan. As it turned out I hit a shift paddle on the steering and didn't know it which put me in manual mode and the car bounced against the rev limiter and stayed there. Maybe that is what happened.

Odds are you don't have a problem but take it in and see if there are any error codes.

If everything is OK you get a free wash anyway.

I see that in the owners manual now. I though it was in S mode that you start Launch Control, but it is in fact, manual mode. A true indication I have not tried it myself yet.

But the situation still exists where the initial poster may have though they were in Launch Control, but was not, for whatever the reason. The fact the initial poster was EXPECTING the transmission to upshift while in manual mode, is an indication they thought the car was in Lauch Control.

How many new scratches does that free car wash come with?

No grunt at the dealership will ever lay a sponge on my car.
