3Gs iPhone now charging
I had issues with the Y cable for awhile not charging my iPhone 3Gs. Attempting to understand from the forum post readings on the complaints that the cable will not charge I discovered something interesting.
So what I found out is that there is indeed two different cables. 61120440796 charges iPhone 3G 61120440812 charges iPhone 3Gs (have not verified if it charges 3G yet). I know a lot of people know this already, but what I was surprised about is that the model # on the Y harness itself reads 0440796 for BOTH cables. Meaning I don't see how you can distinguish the difference. So that explains that some people having no issues while some do. Now there are people who specifically went out to purchase this new cable, 61120440812, and found it still did not charge their iPhone 3Gs. And here is my hypothesis on the reasoning why it doesn't work. When I told my sales rep about it not charging my iPhone he gladly gave me a new one from the package (the correct model 61120440812 was listed on the bag, but again not listed on the harness itself and showing 0440796) and it worked. When I later asked what he did with the old one, 61120440796, he told me he but it back in the bag. That probably got distributed to another individual that bought a bmw and he experienced the same problem. So I suggest that if you do decide to purchase the correct cable, ensure that it works and if it doesn't charge with your 3Gs then get another cable fresh from the package on the spot, because it could still be an old cable. With so many people having issues, cable swapping could be taking over the new cables at dealerships. Some people mentioned that you can have a charge symbol and it not charge. I also considered this so I stood by and watched. My iPhone 3Gs started at 88% and I sat and sat and sat, and watched it go up to eventually 91% while streaming internet music on pandora. So I know this cable is indeed charging the 3Gs. --Chuck |
