What's the average mileage of a Z4 computer generated service interval?
So I'm new to this electronically recommended oil change interval stuff and wondering when I can expect to see the "oil change needed" (or whatever it says) dash icon light up. This is a 2013 35i with a year and a half of warranty/free service left. The car had 19k miles when we bought it six months ago and had been dealer-serviced. It now has 25k miles. I'm used to changing oil every 5k miles and I know many here supplement the dealer-provided service with additional oil changes. For now, I'd just as soon have the dealer worry about it, but I'm wondering when that will be? Any words of wisdom?

When you start the engine, the dashboard display shows the current computation of how many miles (or kilometers) until the next service for a few seconds. If you have I-drive, you cal also look up the service details and intervals on the main menu.

Oh, and as I found out a couple of weeks ago, they will do a free oil change if it hasn't been changed for a year (it's called a low-mileage oil change). They do not reset the calculated interval and they told me they would do that, too if the mileage is reached before the warranty runs out.

The iDrive on my 2016 35i indicates 9K for oil service. Also keep in mind that the OEM BMW oil is Pennzoil Platinum synthetic

So I finally got around to checking this out when I had access to the car this week. Sure enough, when you start the engine, there's a momentary readout that says something like "4100 MLS (till next service) and below that there's a clock icon and the date "10/2016". So my question now is why is the computer calculating that it will take until Oct. of next year to put 4100 miles on the car when the wife has been driving an average of 1000 miles/month since we got the car?

This seems like kind of a drawn out conversation for something fairly straightforward:
Warranty If you drive less than 15k miles a year, you get it changed once per year (covered). If you drive more than 15k miles per year, you get it changed once every 15k miles (covered). (note: Nick's right, it's now 10k on newer cars, but not ours. Different engine). Non-Warranty: If you (like others) believe 15k is too long to go between oil changes, you get it changed when you'd like (some are 5k-5k faithful, others 10k, etc). You pay. You pay to get your oil changed either way once you're out of warranty completely. Some do it themselves. That's it. |
