To all "296" wheels haters!!!!

I own a 6/09 Z4 35i with unfortunately "296" and RFT's

Yes!!! both rear tires cracked several times (about 7 on each rear wheel) and have premature tire wear on the inside... Fortunately I have a great machine shop that does a great job and I also own a second car X6 35i to continue a normal life.

Now I feel like "Driving Miss Daisy"" when I go out on my Z4 due to the frequent cracked rear wheels and this is really "Driving Me Crazy" because I want to drive taking it to the reasonable limits of adhesion on a twisty road. Eventually I am planning to tune the engine with Burger JV3 but I need to deal with the wheel issues first.

I was thinking of the BMW OEM “313” tires 18” from the 1 Series (to get more sidewall) or 19” from the 35is with unfortunately RFT’s because I want to get home after a long night even with a flat tire?

I need all the help I can get from you guys!!

Are “313” wheels forged?

Will the 18” from the 1 series fit or should I go with the 19” ?

I like aftermarket but I will keep it OEM.

Thanks

Eric

I solved my rear wheel cracks (lost 2 wheels) by trading my beloved Z4 in for a new M3 ... found one with no RFT, and nice BMW Forged Wheels.

Regarding your inside tire wear...all BMWs wear the tires down from the inside out (especially the rear tires) due to the camber. This normal.

The tire wear is after almost 10k miles and is not progressive is right at the edge!!
I check the pressure every week on my cars but on the Z4 I do the rears every time I go out. I know it sounds insane but is the only way to find out if any new crack is developing.

If they lost 5psi overnight… Yes !!!! there is a new crack. I even carry an emergency pressure device in the trunk in case I get a low pressure signal on a trip.

BMW have seen the wheels already repaired and they want to see the wheels when they develop a new crack to be able to inspect it. This will probably happen on late April and if approved they will replace the rears with 313 and I will buy the fronts. I will keep the “296” in case there is a recall (like with the 6 Series wheels) and I get the replacement wheels.

This is why I need to know if the 313 are forged or if I should go with the 18” from the 1 Series or keep them 19” as in the 35is????

By the way has any body tried the Burger Tuning JV4 Stage 3?

I know one of you got fed-up with the wheels issue on the Z4 but changing the car for the awesome M3 that has a lot of performance and function but without the Wow!!!! factor.
I’ve seen many M3 owners looking at it!! Plus you have more money for the Champagne and after party…….. The only way I change or trade is if they make a true Z4 M.

This is very true. I had a similar problem on my previous E93, ACS type IV bio /Pirelli Z
It is a BMW problem rather than Z4/296 RTF problem.
Now maybe the 296 RTF wear up faster, this remain to be Proved.

The 313 wheels are a "combo" construction, they are low pressure cast (vs gravity cast), and then the entire rim is roll forged. Have run mine around "The Ring" several times and had no issues, they are now 2 years old.

You would have to run spacers F&R to get back to a proper offset. The 1'ers and E89's are quite different offset setup. It could be done.

No they are cheap cast repo's of the 313, however the offset selection is better and closer to stock given 1/2" wider rims @ 18" dia. You would be better off with an Advan T5. You get what you pay for.

From an E90 post. I guess the Miro's have their moments as well. I think I prefer the 296 failure mode.

Just completed my 10K wheel off inspection of my 296's no cracks/problems. Good even tire wear F&R. Prediciting another 10K/15K miles F/R. Then changing to 18" Advan T5 with non RFT's or something else entirely.

Don't jury rig a wheel setup by using spacers. Buy the correct wheels to fit your car without spacers. If you want some of the best wheels, go with BBS, they have several forged models. TireRack sells them at a fair price and you can get them shipped to you with a set of non-RFT tires. Fortunately, I have the 18" s30i SP wheels on my car and I am running Yokohama ENVigor tires, very pleased. Good luck.

You should go with the style 293 18". I think probably the toughest one. BMW has only these rims available in india and dont offer any other style, and so far they are doing well on the worst roads we have in our country. I have driven 20,000 kms + and also have not heard of any problems from any of the felllow Z users in my city

Fellow 296 owner here... I'm going to hold out until the BBS RE-V become available in the correct E89 offset in the states. Until then I let my Tire & Wheel insurance fight with BMW to replace my cracked wheels when they occur.

BMW checks are 3 mm (0.12") out off round. They mount the wheel in a machine and if they measure more then 3 mm out off round they will tell you that you have gone thru a pothole and will not replace your rim.

Visualize a dial indicator measuring the rim of your wheel as it turns and the dial cannot deflect more then 0.12" (only the machine BMW uses has this feature build right in).

In my opinion BMW is pulling the wool over our eyes. Who knows what the out of roundness was on the wheel when you took delivery. Why only (most of the time anyway) only rear wheels fail? If we have gone thru a pothole or potholes why are the front wheels okay?

My advise, check your wheels often (after a long drive and at least every 3 months). If you see a crack (hairline crack) go back to BMW as soon as you can. Also keep an eye on your air pressure. On my former Z4 I checked air pressure every monday. Make sure you clean your wheel well to check for cracks. IMHO there is something wrong with the design of this 296 wheel, the RFT and 2.5 degree negative camber don't make the situation any better.

Good luck,

Rolf Dieter

That RE-V is a sharp looking wheel. Hope the wait is less than 15 months - that's my predition for burning down the RFT's I am so glad I also bought the BMW wheel & tire insurance.

No telling how long it will take BBS to offer this wheel in E89 offset in the US. They just recently started importing this wheel at all albeit in M3 fitment only. If shipping and import dues and all that wouldn't be so high I'd even consider importing a set, but at $7k for a set when all is set and done it's just too rich for my taste.

I think I saw DSB with BBS RE-V on this forum.
Think he is from SG.
Also, you don't need the exact offset.
I have one from E92 and it fits perfectly, no rubbing, no spacer whatsoever.
5mm offset difference is almost no difference.

Currently the only offset being imported to the US is M3 fitment. 19x9 ET22 and 19x10 ET25. Not going to work for the E89. Z4 fitment is 19×8.5 ET32 and 19×9.5 ET37. My current 296 are 19x8 ET29 and 19x9 ET40.
