Time zone

So I was setting the clock back this morning in the 35is (with NAV) and I found a time zone setting in the clock setting screen above the time. Whatever I set in there did not seem to have any effect on the time, and it was actually set to a German time zone. So I still had to manually set the time back.

Anybody know what the time zone setting is for? The manual I have doesn't even show that field.

Edit: so the printed manual that came with the car has the field, but still doesn't really say what it does.

Its a carry over from Dr Emmett Brown's work from the mid 1980's.
It was prototyped on an old Delorean, but now comes standard in all E89s.

Yeah, it became obsolete when BMW introduced a software flux capacitor (part of the BMW Apps option) ...

Used to be that cars (especially those with NAV) automatically switched. My old TL even used to switch automatically when crossing into other time zones. But when the actual dates of the "summer / winter" time change changed, the automatic was totally confused. Even software updates didn't fix it. Had to switch manually after that.

Our current cars don't even switch automatically anymore and don't even have that option.

I think I read somewhere that Congress would evaluate the effect of the shorter "winter time" on energy use and switch back to the old time frames if there wasn't enough of a savings (or something along those lines). Guess the car manufacturers just decided that was too much uncertainty for them ...

Heard that in Australia, time zones change all the time?

Someday "they" will figure out that cutting a foot off the top of the blanket, and sewing it on the bottom doesn't make the blanket longer...
