i have the Base system as well. I was under the impression that even if you upgraded the speakers it would do no good as the sound coming out of the stereo is "Pre-equalized" and the only way to upgrade the sound is by replacing the head unit. If you do that you lose Idrive visibility and possibly the steering wheel controls.

I have the premium sound in mine, I've found playing with the equalizer definety improves the sound.

I found a thread a year or two ago about optimizing the equalizer settings. People with better ears than mine posted their settings, which I have used and been happy with. I'm not even sure if it was this forum at this point, though. I still don't feel much thump from the bigger speakers behind the seats, unfortunately. I don't want trunk rattling noise, but a bit of rumble for the real lows in music would be nice.

If you are not adjusting the EQ & bass/treble setting and complaining about the quality then you should start there first. keeping everything at 0 will make it sound like a single speaker battery operated boom box.
