Boot Opening - UK Market

I know the specs are different for differen markets so this is for the UK.

Am I right in thinking you can't open the boot without first unlocking the car? I have tried several times and it won't open until I press unlock.

How silly is that? All BMWs/MINIs I've had have allowed you to open the boot when the car is locked so that you don't have to unlock, open boot, lock.

Is it me or is this the case on all UK cars?

On my US market Z4, there is no problem opening the boot with the doors locked, are you opening the boot with the remote? I have Comfort Access so even with the doors locked, as long as I have the key on me, I can just lift the handle on the boot to open it.

I just tried mine using the remote to open with the doors locked, no problem.....maybe its a setting with the car/remote that needs to be changed

I can't imagine that there would be a difference in that type of feature between the US and UK

Dealer came back and said that apparently all new BMWs are being configured so you can't open the boot with the remote unless the car is unlocked. It's a safety feature so you don't lock your keys in the car.
As I said to him, there is no point in having the button on the remote anymore then as you will generally use the bmw emblem lever to lift the boot anyway!

Your dealer was talking rubbish!!
I don't have comfort access and I can open the boot without unlock the car first. May be you need to have the car checked and ask the dealer to FIX it!!!!!

Perhaps, via factory programming, that's true in UK & Europe, but not in US & Asia - I have just the regular remote (US) and can unlock and open the boot without unlocking the car.

Although, I'm not sure that's a good thing. I like your dealer's logic (though it's not the case for US cars) - I almost locked my keys in the boot of my locked car yesterday!

My 2006 325i coupe was the same - you had to unlock the car before opening the boot. There is nothing to fix, this is the way that they are designed for the UK market.

I think it is actually possible to lock your key in the boot... when the boot is open press the lock button on the fob - the alarm light under the mirror starts flashing more frequently showing that the boot is not closed but the alarm has been activated. Throw the key into the boot and close the lid Voila, you have locked the key in the boot.

Can I ask what might be a simple questions?

Lets pretend I'm carrying stuff - IF I mangaged to walk up to the car, and unlock the doors AND then press the "unlock boot" button, what exactly should happen?
I have a Z4 sdrive35i and when I press the "unlock boot" button, I rightly or wrongly assumed my boot would open, like open fully upwards!

What actually happends is my boot "unlocks" and i still have to lift the bood lid up before being able to put the stuff i am carrying into the boot.

I know someone with a 7 series and they click the "unlock" and the boot fully opens...

Is mine faulty? Whats the deal? The "unlock boot" button, at the moment, seems kinda redundant...

No problem with yours. Mine does not pop up. It may be the double hinges that prevent a spring tension to pop it up.

It is weird how all the BMWs I've had have been different. My '99 540i and '02 M5 just raised the trunk (boot) lid a bit. My '08 550i springs it up so hard, it would bust a chin and now the Z4 doesn't even raise up.

One issue I have with mine is with the Comfort Access. On the 550i, with the car locked and the key in my pocket, I can press the button on the trunk and open it. On the Z4, CA doesn't work. I have to press and hold the remote's trunk release button to open it.

richard in NC - I have Comfort Access as well. With car locked or unlocked and remote in pocket, can push on top of trunk emblem and it opens. If I push button on remote nothing happens and if I hold button down alarm goes off.

Sometimes the trunk emblem works when locked, sometimes with a long pause, and sometimes not. I need about a 1 sec push on the remote.

I can confirm that for UK/European cars, the cars are being configured by default so that you cannot open the boot without first unlocking the car.

If you ask the dealer, they can program your car so that you *can* open the boot without having to unlock the car first. This is what I did (ask the dealer to program it so that I can unlock the boot without unlocking the car) before I took delivery of my car.

Besides, can't you just phone BMW and tell them to unlock the car remotely in the worse case scenario? I assume that they also unlock the boot?
