Kind'a cool, but rather I'd have a foil wrap done so it could be changed later if needed.

My question - is BMW going for the all time record for the smallest engine in a sports car? Their power to weight ratio is getting worse. MY 2013 they'll announce a 1.0 liter model, and then what, MY 2014 a sub-1.0 liter model? I just hope they're able to keep the 3.0 liter alive.

At least Porsche is holding it's ground by increasing engine size in a sports car and able to maintain the same carbon and fuel efficiency footprint.

I like black Z4s and I like red Z4s, but I think that's a hideous combination.

its basically a bigger Miata. BMW should be ashamed of themselves for putting the letter M on this.

What BMW really needs to do is make the roof out of carbon fiber. I guarantee you that would make the car better in every way.

Other than the steering wheel - You cannot see an "M" anywhere on the outside.

I see you did increase your post count though. LOL

This and add power instead of reducing it.

Don't you worry, the "M" here stands for "Marketing".

Ferrari 599 works with that combination very well but Z4 absolutely not.

M Sport-of???

They should have spent all that extra money on a model with a more powerful engine instead of all that add on crap. I would call that Z an M Sport-of. All show and no go.

I guess this is a Europe only model. I am a bit confused as to whether this is a petrol or diesel engine. Obviously, it is not an N20.

Call me crazy, but if BMW wanted to promote manual transmission sales, why don't they make as many of their show cars MT's as possible?

Great looking car until I saw the AT, then I was sad...

Not liking this roof color! The M here is surely Marketing. Well, I'm probably going for the Jaguar F-Type next year! What an absolute beauty.

Wrong!

I happen to think the Miata is a great little car. Best of all it's true to purpose - a cheap, light, fun to drive sports car.

But how are you M3 fan boys going to get that superior feeling when the MY 2014 M3 comes out and has same Z4 35i tt engine - how that must hurt!

Other than a few suspension bits, there will be no difference between the Z4 35i and M3 drive trains. Add a Dinan stage III tune to a run of the mill Z4 35i, change the dampers and anti-roll bars, add an LSD then lay in wait for the "real" ///M.

.

Totally dilutes the meaning of "M", it's so pedestrian

(and this is not a knock on the Miata, but BMW for watering down "M" to this point)

It is a good looking car, but just a sheep in wolves clothing. It's a shame to for the M badge.

I have no idea what some of you guys are complaining about with the engine, the SDrive20i with 180hp came out with the 28i iirc. This is nothing new and the M-Sport badge with nothing but aesthetic and suspension upgrade has been plaguing BMWs for years now.

And by the way, it is a toned down N20 engine and it is made to compete with the SLK250, which is available here in the US.

I hear you. Smaller displacement is the trend. Most have accepted it without question.

You see, I've lived through an era when things were overbuilt. Regardless if it was cars, tools, equipment or a building. Engineer's understanding of materials science was far inferior to ours today. They compensated by designing a little bit stronger, a little bit heavier, a little bit larger than was needed because it was more seat of the pants and you never knew exactly what punishment the product might face. As a consequence, things were designed in the long run to last longer than they needed to. But, we have many of those products that one might consider relics of the past that still function today with little or no effort. They are worth quite a bit of money, too.

Today, we design things to meet exacting product "life cycle" expectations and function. We dare not over design due to cost and the need for immediate profit expectations, not to mention the consumer losing interest. In basic terms we produce and sell/buy throw away products.

The laughable aspect of this is we justify it in the name of efficiency and economy. Everybody is freaking out as if buying smaller, but higher tech products could really save the planet. The fact is the huge energy requirements for high tech production, shorter life cycles, and the continual need to feed new product into the market place belies any savings.

I defy anyone to suggest that any 2012 automobile will function within spec 40 years from now, not to mention being crushed and recycled to make another Toyota or refrigerator. However, I own 4 such relics that would pass that test right now.

So the sort answer: complaining about smaller displacement is really about diminishing returns and lack of product longevity.

Cheers
