Middle school boy faces a year in prison because of NRA shirt

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/0...6pLid%3D331130

14 yr old boy wore an nra shirt to school and could end up getting a year in prison. I fully understand the school's right to ask him not to wear the shirt, but why did the police have to be involved. I know at some schools they just make people turn their shirt inside out or make them go home and change. I am by no means an nra supporter, but is this really what our country has come to? Some will say that a dress code solves all of this and I agree. However, a tshirt that in my opinion isn't even offensive should be handled in the principal's office not a courtroom. What are we coming too...

"Despite being asked several times by school officials to remove the garment, Marcum kept it on, reportedly saying he was not violating the school’s dress code and was exercising his First Amendment rights."

Did they try to suspend him or send him home before getting the cops involved or did he refuse to go home.

Schools have a habit of refusing to back down even when they know they are wrong. They knew there was no rule or law being broken by him wearing the shirt but they pushed and pushed until the issue exploded into what it is now. It's the "because I said so" way of winning an argument.

See this is what I don't know, it doesn't really say how the event escalated so quickly and why. I would like to hear a statement from the school to explain why the police were brought in

when my son was in the 8th grade, he got suspended from school for calling his friends "hoez" on Facebook. The girls were his friends but apparently one of the girls mom saw it and reported it to the school, she must've been a "hoe" when she was younger.

Last fall, at the local HS, kids were chanting "USA" at the soccer games, and they got in trouble...

Yes, I live in the USA, and yes the school is located in the USA. School board tried to go off on some tangent that this violated the rights of the (illegal?) immigrant students on the visiting soccer team, visiting from 10 miles away at most.

That one I don't quite like. Yeah, chanting USA by itself isn't offensive, but what was the motivation behind it? Was it to put down the foreign looking students? If so, poor sportsmanship, IMHO.

If it was just to be stupid or something, fine whatever.

I have cousins who home schooled their five kids. I've never met a more socially awkward bunch.

Those incidents are insanely rare. Also, bomb threats are nothing new for schools and it's ALWAYS a student trying to get out of a test.

Since 1980, 297 people have been killed in school shootings while 1,377,971 people were killed in auto accidents. You'll definitely still let them in the car...

And while we are on this whole tangent of pussifying America. How about giving every shitty kid a participation award? I would chose to lose 10 times for the rush of being the winner once. Now "everyone is a winner" and it has taken all the fun out of the competition.

Don't even get me started on disciplining your children or letting them play outside with you not watching - just ridiculous.

It is standard operating procedures these days for schools to call the police for most anything a kid may do which breaks the rules. Also, their is no such thing is free speech in a school, the courts have upheld the rights of schools to censor kids. Anyway the reason schools call the police is because of idiot parent who have more money then sense suing schools because they discipline their kids. So now the school just stay out of it call the police and let you deal with the police on the matter. You can not sue the police for arresting your kids.

THIS! I helped coach a soccer team for a couple years but couldn't stand the "How come my little Johnny doesn't get to play as much as Mitch does?" bullshit. Johnny didn't get to play because he sucked, of course the parents didn't like to hear that so I was an asshole and was bad for the kids. You are either first or not good enough, playing state level soccer for years growing up as well as golfing in regional events now, second was never good enough. It's too damn bad that kids these days feel like they should be rewarded because they went out there and tried! So what, you didn't win, you don't get a damn cookie!

Well, when I was a kid, playing outside meant that I was going where ever I wanted in the town, granted, times were different now and I was taught that if an adult asked me to do something, it was done. The rules were, and I quote, "If you get in trouble, don't come home, if you're not home when we eat, you won't, and when you are asked to do something, it gets done." Ahh the good old days...
