Inner Projectors not used?

I was just looking at my projector headlights and it seems that both the low beams and high beams are coming from the outer projectors and that the inner projectors are not used for anything.

Opened up the hood and can't find any bulb sockets for the inner ones. Can anyone confirm that the inner ones are just there purely for cosmetic?

Yup, the inner lights are for show. There isn't actually a Hi and a Low beam, there is only "The Light" (cue background chorus), long and short range illumination off. Single bulb are handled by a shutter, which is what you will see moving when you first turn them on, to level the beam to account for the vagueries of passenger/baggage/fuel weight

Any way to add some extra lights to the inner projectors?

Front fogs essentially...

To clarify, the movement during start-up is actually not from the shutter/shield, but rather the projector themselves moving/auto-leveling. The shutter movement is an all-or-nothing type of thing. With low beams on, they are in the "down" position to cut off the beam of light from blinding other drivers. When you turn the high beams on, the shutters then are moved "up" to let the whole beam shine through.

As for making that projector functional - it does seem possible although I have never tried or investigated into it much, as there does seem to be a lid/cap that you can open up to gain access to the projector.

Now the hard part would be where you would run the power from, and how you would keep the bulb stable.

Maybe the Bavarians indeed planned to fit some foglights into the design but decided against it after tooling was already in place.

Wonder why they would though...
