Tint or not

My sister in law had a Z4M. We just bought an E89 35is in AW. We were talking about mods, including tinting the windows. Her husband said it might not look good with too down, windows up. Any consensus on this? We r in Western WA, so the top will be up most of its life.

I would role with 50% ceramic - very light tint with incredible heat rejection.

flpnout... I have the same car setup you do... M-kit with those wheels....

aargh I'm so in love with the 3D design diffusor & lip... Looks so good but I feel it's to expensive for what you're getting. Got more pics of your car? At the 3D design website it is on ugly aftermarket wheels...

Mine is black and was wondering about tinting aswell but afraid I might be 'too dark' in total. Nice ride man!

Yoytek - They are expensive for sure but the fitment is guaranteed spot on! IND hooked me up. I can't remember how much, but they offered a slight discount. Some thought they were OEM BMW CF parts. At first I wasn't sure I really wanted the front lip, but IMHO it turned out nice. I have 35% ceramic tint. Pics per your request:

OP: just be warned that the tint will never bond perfectly along the edges of the glass where BMW have raised black dots.
These small dots can create air bubbles between the dots and when you are up close they look a bit crude to the perfectionist.

Personal choice, but I would skip the tint.

I did 35% tint all around.. no windshield! Looks superb, and the guy who did mine practically perfected along the dot matrix!

I do believe anything darker than 35% will look ehh when top is down and windows rolled up!

Good luck with the decision

I think we'll like the tint and probably a bit lighter. Well familiar with the dot matrix problems. We have a couple folks that do really good work with our cars (4th bimmer). I especially like the CF on the side mirrors. Have to add that to our mod list (along with painted reflectors and 19" summer wheels).

Anyone else pics with tint, top down, and windows up? Looks great with the top up.

We only get a handful of days out here to enjoy the top down. So, we have the cash, why not blow it on what we want

I originally thought I would paint the mirrors, but time has mellowed my dislike for them.
Now they are just mirrors.
No one but a true trainspotter even notices them.
When we has three DSB with ivory lined up last month no one noticed the mirrors were different on mine, but many spotted the front bumper and of course the wheels..
A few even noticed the ride height difference with the adaptive suspension..

Out of interest, I noticed they have discontinued the 35i here in Oz and dropped the list price of the 35is by $10k.
Does that mean they have removed the 25 a year limit they originally promised for the 35is and have they removed any of the standard features out of the 35is?
Eg DCT or M adaptive suspension?

Tint on a AW looks very sharp ! If you have it done make sure it is within the legal limit of the areas you plan to travel in.

BTW there is a German joke regarding tinted windows on a sports car.

The german comicor named Herbert Hisel had a conversation with one of his friends (in one of his performances)

Herbert to his Friend; Say why on earth did you darken your windows like this on your sports car?

Friend to Herbert; Why it drove me crazy each time I stopped at a traffic light the dackels (German Sausage dog) would look into my windows.

It is funny when he tells it (Herbert) perhaps not so funny when I translate it to English

I have never in my life put the top down, then rolled up the windows. Why would you do this? To each his own, I guess. Reminds me of people that wear a fleece vest but take off the sleeves. Are you cold or aren't you?

It has nothing to do with the cold for me.

In the first six months I was getting horrible black marks on my white leather seats from the seat belts.
I asked BMW to fix them as I thought the dye was bleeding into the alcantra.

When they investigated they found the black marks were brake dust and soot.
The shape of the seat belt retractor cover is a natural air scoop that catches dust, grime, soot and brake dust as you drive along with the windows down. It gets embedded in the seat belt as you pull it in and out and rubs off on the seat.

They cleaned the seat belt for me and asked me to try drivign with the windows up.

Two advantages of this.
1. Less buffetting and easier to talk and hear the music, and
2. I no longer get the dirty marks on my white alcantra seats.

18 months on since I found this out and I have not had to clean the seats since.
My windows now stay up when I drive.

I learned my lesson with light colored leathered seats. Number one reason why I got black leather seats for the zed. Not just dust and grime, but dye transfer from dark leather jackets and blue jeans. Never again will I have light colored leather.

The thing about having the top down only a few times a year is sad. Living in southern California, the only time I have the top up is when the car is parked or it's raining out. Probably would not own a convertible for just a few days a year of top down weather.

I have to agree regarding light coloured seats, on my 2008 Z4 my seats were light coloured changed to a 2009 Z4 with black seats. Both aforementioned cars were super otherwise. I always wanted to drive a convertable and so I did then I went back to a coupe for exactley what Mayhem mentioned. Naturally I made the interior black leather what else.
