Question regarding antennas

I have a 2009 z4 that I purchased about a month and a half ago, and I have a few small mods on my mind.

My car is equipped with NAV, and my question is; Is the antenna on the car how the NAV works? or is it only for the AM/FM radio?

I'm looking to completely get rid of the antenna and have an internal antenna installed, but I need to know first if the antenna is how my NAV works.

Thanks ahead of time for any input.

We don't have those on the Z4 in Europe - it's a North American feature. (I assume it's because we have DAB radio rather than satelite radio?

I also think that's just for sat radio.

Maybe jparnes1 thought he's on the 5 series forum as that's his other car

I am a grasshopper here. I'm pretty young and try to learn as much as I can about things, only way to learn is to ask right?

Thanks a lot for that link. Very informative. Thanks for everybody who got back with the quick replies!

EDIT: I've ordered a hidden antenna already and can't wait to get it installed. My biggest pet peeve about this car is that the antenna completely takes away from the sleek look and lines of this vehicle. Can't wait to get it taken care of. I might even have my guy that does my work throw in some Eibach lowering springs as well.

The diagram labels everything except #3, 4, and 5 on the trunk lid. What are those? Satellite radio?

I think just about everybody on this forum has switched to one of the " stubby " antennas . Takes about 2 miutes to screw off the original antenna and screw in the new stubby. Looks a lot cleaner. There are many posts on this if you do a search. Can get the stubby from Ebay....

I'm going to remove it completely rather than the stubby. I just don't want anything there. I think the whole antenna completely removed will give the car a very clean, sleek look. In my opinion the antenna breaks it up.

But that's just me, if others like it with the stubby antenna, at least they didn't have to do the patch/paint work to cover up the hole :P

That's not correct. There are 3 FM antennas in the car for FM diversity. Technically installing a stubby antenna will handicap one of the 3 FM antennas, but in practice, it does not appear to have a noticeable effect on FM reception, probably because it can fall back on the other two.
