Exclamation Help: Annoying problem - can't fill with gas/fuel without auto-shutoff going off!

When filling the car with fuel at the station, I can only go a couple of seconds before the auto-cutoff stops the fuel. Has anyone had this issue? I've had it on all my cars before but a simple rotation of the fuel pump solved it or even withdrawing slightly. But not on the Z4!

It only started doing it recently in the colder weather which is strange.

This is a known issue. Just turn the pump handle so the back end is pointing upward and it should work fine....

I've never had that issue with my Z4.

Actually I had this happen for the first time this past week. I think it depends on the pump but don't hold me to that. My solution was to simply not depress the trigger as far but it took a lot longer to fill.

This. I had this problem a few times and I just had to depress the trigger lightly. Happened only a few times at selective petrol stations... No biggie i guess... Just annoying

Hey Alex - how are you going?

I live in a much colder part of this great state than you do, and I dont have an issue on filling.
(3 degrees C this morning as I drove to work - bracing - almost wishing I had had the opportunity to option the heated steering wheel)

While I dont deny the design of the fuel feed pipe may influence the sensor in the pump nozzle, the root cause of the problem will be in the sensitivity of the pump nozzle sensor - not in the car.

Use a different pump or station if you can to see if it makes a difference. (Last time I was up in yoru kneck of the woods I had no problem sourcing 98 RON)

The only time I have ever had this problem happen to the Z was in summer, and the pump was being cranky for everyone. I ended up using a different bowser at the same station with no problems.

I have solved that issue by not inserting the nozzle quite so deep. Make sure it is in just past the first catch and straight in, not tilted. It still cuts off a bit early. I usually get another gallon in before the next cut-off. Then that's about it.

Thanks for the replies.

Im good Stig. I'll try using a different bowser at the same station. I tried a different station (BP) and it did it there also.

Tried the upside down position too.

Had car now for 2 years and it has always done this.
It cuts off way too early, then I spend 5 minutes getting another couple of gallons in.
Mind you.....how about this..........
Was filling up one day....and whoosh, petrol overflowed before pump cut out! Advised filling station personnel and cleared up mess.
Drove home (2 miles)......thought, "I wonder how much petrol I can squeeze in there from my spare can?"
I then got another 10 litres in......!!

Can only assume the cut-outs on pumps function correctly and the Z4 tank 'foams' considerably in last couple of gallons............?

The only way I can get it to work is by turning the pump upside down then filling it VERY slowly. Takes forever.

Weird - mine doesn't.

When are you going to bring that car of yours down south for a drive up Mt Glorious?

I'll let you fill mine at the bowser and see how well it can work.

noticed this also

I just don't put the nozzle all the way in and I can fill at full speed. If I bury the nozzle I have to drip the gas in slowly by hand and it keeps shutting off.

I have had this problem twice now as well. It happened today and is quite annoying. I finally gave up. I will try another pump tomorrow.

I get this more often than not. None of the solutions I've tried has helped (but I've never even considered the upside-down positioning).
