Question Does everyone replace tires with run-flats?

Shopping for a used E89 which (I presume) all come with RFT Bridgestones which run about $1200 for a replacement set from TireRack. Non-RFT are about half that. So my question is do many owners replace with the cheaper non-RFT option and, if so, what happens should you get a flat? This is the same problem I've had with the current-gen Miata for the past 8 years, but at least Mazda provides a can of tire goop and a 12V inflator (for what that's worth!).

Most people here on the forum replace the RFT with similar-in-price non-RFT for performance and comfort reasons, not price point. However, non-RFT are generally cheaper than RFT, though not by much. The most common choice here seems to be PSS for Max Performance Summer, and Continental DWS for A/S

Since there is no space for a spare, many people get the Continental Comfort Kit to plug the hole up on the spot.

Or, if you like to pay a premium for the brand and brand alone, the BMW Mobility one:

Those are the "can of goop and air" equivalent of your Miata.

Buy the Michelin Pilot Super sports and get AAA in case you get a flat.

If you got Michelins I believe they still come with a 3 year road assistance deal included. They'll come out and change a flat or tow you in at no charge. Probably doesn't negate the plan to carry a tire inflator but at least gives a bit more peace of mind.

If you are looking for tires, for about the price of a set of new tires I can sell you my brand new complete set of wheels and tires that have everything right in the package. Just bolt them on and go. Less than 200 miles on the complete set. Wheels tires tpms and hub centric rings. The tires are all season continental. I have a thread in the for sale section on here. Check it out.

I continue to replace my RFT for new RFT's. But simply because my better half uses the car and don't want to risk her having a puncture and being stranded.

I know she wouldn't get on with a mobility/puncture/goop kit.

If it were just for me, I'd do what most others do and go to non run flats.

I swapped out of the rigid RFT's for non Conti DWS. Was ~$850 for all 4 installed at a local shop. Dealer quoted $1800 for RFT's. I'll take the risk of towing for that variance and a better ride.

Thanks to all. It's exactly the same situation as the Miata world where I come from. Without a spare, there are no really good alternatives.

The best alternative is spare set of wheels. It doesn't help a lot when the flat happens but makes it much faster to be back on the road. Most shops don't stock our size tires so there will be a few days wait for the tire. If you have a spare set of wheels n tires you can just bolt in the set and roll. Then if it takes a while for a tire to get shipped in you can still drive your car.

So that's like $2500 worth of insurance?

Depends on the type of wheel you go with. If you go with factory wheels then yes it's expensive. I have a set of wheels n tires with tpms for sale for $1500 obo. Brand new less than 200 miles on the continental extreme contact dws tires I have them in the for sale threads. Check it out. It's a great deal the tires alone were $900 with shipping. And tpms are factory bmw. It's a great deal.
