Dead battery help?!?
I came out this morning and my fob wouldn't work. Tried my other fob and nothing. I opened the door manually using the key, and put my fob into the ignition (I have comfort access). Still nothing. I am guessing the battery is dead. Nothing works. This first question is why my battery died overnight since I have been driving my car a lot. Secondly, how do I manually open the trunk so I might try to jump start the car?

Without checking the handbook, my recollection is that the jump start connections are actually in the engine bay rather than in the battery compartment in the boot.

You have a red terminal (positive) in the engine bay on the driver side and the negative terminal is a nut on the passenger side to try to jump start your car.

Yeah check with your dealer about the recall first.

Batteries will fail like that, fine one day and a bad cell the next. It will be under warranty

Thanks to all, I was able to charge the battery a bit and get it started today. Monday I need to call the service rep. I really need to know why it went dead so suddenly. It's not like I let it sit for a long time. However, one thing that happened a few days ago, was that I did get a dash message saying something like, "INCREASED BATTERY DISCHARGE." The other casualty in all of this was the keyhole dust flap which broke and now refuses to spring back. Never used the key to open my car prior to this. Argh....

When we had the car in at the dealer for another issue, had them look at the battery as it did not seem to be holding a charge. They looked at the faults and told us the battery was running low because we were not locking our car with the key fob. Apparently the car is continually using its sensors to see if it is being opened and this runs down the battery in a couple of weeks. I was quite surprised.

UPDATE:
Dealer determined that my '12 E89 was not the subject of the recall campaign. His technician determined my increased battery discharge was due to an iPhone left for a couple of days in the cradle, keeping the car from going to sleep. They trickle charged my car, they changed the oil, they ordered a new door lockset from Germany (hinged dust cover won't spring back). They loaned me a brand new fully loaded Lincoln Navigator overnight. All in all, a positive experience, all covered under warranty. One of the reasons I drive an extra 30 miles to my current dealer, passing two closer BMW dealers. |
