Aberlour 12 is pretty good, but my preference still lies (and sometimes so do I) with the Aberlour A'bundah cask-strength stuff. I assume it's 12, but no watering to get it down to 80 proof. The current batch I have is 132 or so. . .

Lots of folks on the whiskey/scotch blogs praise the A'bundah. Need to add that to the Buy list.

So I did a little taste test to compare the Aberlour 18 to the Balvenie Doublewood 12. The Balvenie has more initial bite and tastes sweeter. The Aberlour is smoother with deeper flavor. Definitely one of my new favorites!

Tonight is my last attempt to drink the Laphroaig. I'll try it with ice and club soda. Hopefully that tones down the smoke.

Unless I'm in the mood for some of M_Six's smoke, that is my go-to for about 1.5 years. The yogini who I got onto the web to promote her business gave me another bottle for Christmas. I feel bad for the 12 sitting next to it on the shelf, 12 ain't getting no attention.

I tried the Laphroaig with club soda last night. Better, but still too much smoke. If it's an acquired taste, it's going to be rough going for a while, I guess.

I'm not quite to that level, but yeah, I don't think it was a taste I acquired. It may have something to do with the fact my parents met and married during their service to the Peace Corp, stationed in Pakistan. I'm guessing my parents were pretty well saturated with spice when I was conceived.

I picked up the A'bundah today. But I also grabbed a six-pack of Sam Adams Rebel Rouser Double IPA, so that's on tap for tonight. The A'bundah will have to wait.

Cracked open the A'bundah tonight. The sales guy at the liquor superstore was telling me to be careful with my first taste since A'bundah is "hot." He said the high alcohol content will surprise most Scotch drinkers. He was mostly right. It's quite strong, but not unpleasant. I took his further advice and added some seltzer water. Just a bit, but it really tones down the bite and lets some really nice flavors come through. I could get to like this stuff.
I just wish it wasn't $80/bottle.

Yes, it's $80/bottle, but if you are gonna seltzer it down you end up with 50% more buzz than something that is 80 proof. A neat glass only needs to be 1.5 fingers or less to enjoy the evening.

This is true. I knew it was stronger so I halved the pour. Glad I did or I wouldn't have been feeling well this morning. 1.5 fingers is just about right.

Props to you, UncleWede. You were right. 1.5 to 2 fingers of A'bundah with a splash of seltzer is delicious and extends the bottle for a couple of weeks. I think I've found my daily quaff.

Now when you say two fingers is that horizontal or vertical?

Bought the Aberlour 16 this weekend. Very smooth and tasty. Might become my new Go To scotch.
