Jaguar F-Type
Had an enjoyable day at the Jaguar Driving experience today up in the LA area (Carson). Drove the line of Jags including the F type with the 340 HP V6 and the 490hp, both supercharged. Lots of get up and go for sure in the V8 490hp, but it felt a lot heavier on the front end versus the V6 than the +150lbs (3671 lbs) advertised. The F-Type V8 S starts at 75K so your easily talking $90K. It has limited numbers and exclusivity going for it, but for that kind of money I'd by a C7 Vette. Not really much you can learn about a car in a short autocross type lap. Nice set of brakes on the car that do make the Z4 brakes pale in comparison. They had one in British Flag Livery, which was a nice touch. The interior materials seemed a bit nicer than the Z4. It's a nice looking car. The Jaguar personnel made a big deal about the 7 Cu Ft of truck space - in reality the trunk space of the F-Type makes the Z4 trunk spacious in comparison. An equally equipped F Type MSRP priced out at about $79K or $15K more my Z4 so I would expect some upgrades, brakes, differential, & interior materials.
They had a coupe version on site but not for driving. Besides the driving, one of the coolest things about the event was that Robert Guerrero (ex F1, CART, & IRL driver) was part of the Jaguar event team.

Thx for the review. What do you mean they made a big deal out of the trunk space? I'd like to know how come the space is so lousy...do they have an extra engine back there? LOL.

Just found that the 380hp/1600kg version of the F-type convertible is 1.2 million RMB / 193k USD in China. Ie 50% more expensive than a 35i which can be tuned to more or less the same hp/kg figure.
But it is a Jaaaaaag... |

Jag lost its cachet a long time ago and is only recently trying to get it back w/ this new F-Type. Brand doesn't appeal to me save for that car, but it only comes in AT and seems overpriced.
EDIT: also something messed up about the British car industry, are there still any 'biggish' ones not owned by foreigners? Only Aston Martin of late? Jag/Land Rover-Indian Macca-Bahrainese Lotus-Malay RR, Bentley-German Last edited by tranquility; 03-31-2014 at 01:40 PM.. |

Actually, Ford sold Aston recently and it was just purchased by a consortium led by a British race car driver. Not much money in premium brands. High R&D, low volume, and expensive manufacturing and materials do not lead to high profits and when things go sideways, people quit buying premium cars first. Sort of amazing that MB and BMW are still independent.

I believe even independently-owned McLaren has shown you can do well running a ultra-low volume/exclusive super & hyper car company, and fund racing programs to boot. |

Check out this article
http://www.autoblog.com/2014/03/14/v...-porsche-sold/ 18% margin on Porsche, 10% for Audi and 3% for VW In dollars I think profit is something like $23k per car on Porsche and $500 per car on Vw I think if the premium brand is well done it is a huge money maker... |

Don't misunderstand. If these companies were only liabilities, companies like VW could R&D on lower end cars. I'm sure premium companies like porsche take care of themselves, but with such low volumes, their overhead is very high per car, and they are not very recession-proof. These lines compliment a major manufacturers portfolio better than they stand on their own. If VW only makes 3%, but sells 100 times as much as porsche, it becomes a low income brand. It also doesn't take a hundred times as many factories to produce a hundred times as many Golfs. In the porsche/audi/Volkswagen example, VW can use its manufacturing capability to make producing porsche and audi more cost effective. It can test new tech on their lower production premium lines before bringing it to their main sellers (vw's DSG). On their own, premium lines have a harder go of it...but not impossible (BMW, MB, McLaren).
