New to forum
Hello everyone. I've been reading the post for a few days and have learned some really good info so I decided not lurk and join.
I've just bought a 2011 Z4 35i with premium / sport / cold weather / dual clutch navigation / iPod integration and some other goodies. Really like the car even though haven't driven it that much - only got about 100 miles on it in a week  sold my Mcoupe some 10 years ago because after 4 months it only had 800 miles on it. The 5 series sedans ive owned I drove the crap out of those go figure. This time I'm headed on a big trip from NJ up to Troranto, Canada. My concern is the engine isn't broken yet and won't be until probably at the end of the trip (500 miiles each way). What would be a good strategy to break the engine in on that long 10 hour drive without sitting on cruise control in 7th gear for hours on end. Thank you |

avoid the highway for a while, throw it in manual and go thru the gears but nothing past 4k rpm, then jump back on the highway and give it the beans but again nothing higher than 5k rpm, rinse and repeat. I think 500miles each way is plenty to complete the break in. Just remember that you have to break in tires and breaks and tranny not just engine, tires and breaks are easy, just don't slam on the breaks or make the tires squeal around corners. You should be fine. Congrats and enjoy!

 My 2 cents .... BMW recommends a maximum break-in car speed of 100 MPH i.e not to exceed 100 MPH (as most of you know there are in areas between cities in Germany no speed limits). This is a general European requirement or caution to the owner for obvious reasons. In addition if you pick up your car in München then when you return it for shipping to North America the oil will be changed for you. In the US the highest legal speed limit is 75 to 80 mph as far as I know. So what we are being told is simply do not go higher then 100 MPH during the break-in period. I don't think there is anyone here (or driving a BMW except for a Teenager taking Dad's car for a spin) that would exceed 100 MPH on his or her new car. The manual basically alerts you to those facts and details. I would never ever (nor have I done so on any of my cars) red line an engine. I don't know about others. Anyway ... just my 2 cents

Just vary your speed and RPM and you will be fine.

Well, if you have the time on your way to TO, I have two words that may interest you... Finger Lakes!
Plan a more scenic route north and you will naturally vary your speed and RPM touring through the various ridges and valleys around the area.   Good luck with you car!

Or come off 81 between Binghamtom and Cortland, head west on 79 towards Ithaca, then over to Watkins Glen, towards Hammondsport, up the east shore of Keuka to Penn Yan, then on to Canandaigua before you rejoin the Thruway south of Rochester, a nice three hour scenic detour.

Either way I'm going to take your advise and go through the Finger Lakes region. Beets staring at long stretches of highway with not to see. Little long but better for the car and my mind. Love the fact I can send a google map to the car; that is a great feature. Only problem is I've not got a 1/2 dozen different ways to get there.

Just remember, all you can send via Google maps to the car is the destination, it will not send all the waypoints you might build along the way. Have a great trip!
