Buying an sDrive35i: problems to inspect now/expect in future
I'm looking to buy a 35i coming off lease at around the ~30k mile. Wanted to know what common problems to look for during an inspection and what issues to expect after a few years of ownership.
Thank you in advance. |

Make sure the roof works perfectly, no hangs or delays at any part of the raise/retract cycle. It's a complex system which can be difficult to diagnose and fix. Best to fix all problems under factory warranty since the CPO warranty doesn't cover everything.

essential you ask to view the car on the ramps to check the inside of the alloys are not cracked , too late when you have driven out of dealership
Check the gearbox gaskets for leaks |

at 30k miles and just 3 years old (maybe... you didn't say what year the car was), I can't imagine you will find anything significant.
I like the comments on the wheel inspection, roof, and leaks of any kind. It should idle smooth as butter, if it kind of stutters around at idle then it may be in need of an intake valve cleaning. Get in a safe area of straight road fully warmed up, Put it in Sport+ mode Cruise along in third gear at about 2,000 rpm, Smash the throttle all the way to the floor (hold on and don't panic! ) The car should accelerate something fierce, do this for a few seconds as long as you are in a safe area. If the car does this with no warnings, bad hesitations, etc, you are good to go! |
