BMW Revises Recommended Oil Change Intervals to 10,000 Miles for 2014+ Models
28
COMMENTS

BMW has changed its long time recommended oil change mileage intervals for all 2014 models and beyond. The changes apply to all vehicles produced from July 2013 on.

Previously, BMW recommended a 15,000 mile / 24 month Condition Based Service interval, but as of July 2013, the new basic interval will be every 10,000 miles / 12 months. This applies to both gasoline and diesel models.

The Z4 roadster, M5/M6 and ActiveHybrids have some special recommendations, which you can see in the announcement and charts below.

Welcome to the world of forced induction. At least BMW recognizes that increased maintenance is required.

Does anyone know if this "new" solution is now included in the service reminder for 2014?

Garage List
10,000 miles is still too much. I've seen waaaay too many vehicles come into the shop with turbos grenaded to hell. The oil turns into a grease and gets caked onto the valve cover and needs to be SCRAPED off.

I'll stick to my 5,000 mile oil services TYVM.

+1. That's been my protocol from day 1. Where do you work?

Agreed even at the cost of even a BMW supplied oil change at 5000 miles vs 10k, will pay huge long term dividends as the oil is the life blood of this HP , twin turbo engine (and all engines). Preventive maintenance anyone.

Plug changes at 40 & 60k - really? Why other than oil burn?

Before the updated maintenance schedule, plugs were replaced at 45K, now 40K. I'm thinking these turbocharged engines just have to work harder and under a great deal more stress. Parts wear out faster, fluids need replacing sooner. But what does the microfilter have to do with anything?

So better fuel efficiency, so you think you're saving money, then get stung by more regular service intervals? Stick with the old guzzlers and at least have fun with power and sound...

Even if you're going to follow their interval and not doing it sooner, what's the big deal? 10K miles for an oil change is once, maybe twice a year.

After an oil change my display says 12.000km until next change. Ie around 7500miles. I noticed that it then counts down depending on my driving style, but it always starts at that number! Perhaps it is being set that low by the local service people?

BMW China also recommended I changed my spark plugs at 50.000km and they changed the gasoline and air filters way before then. The latter makes sense as the gasoline and air is not of world class quality here...

I never bothered to have the micro-filter replaced though... I had it "dry-cleaned" once, but since I drive (and live) top down everyday in one of the most polluted places in the world, what difference will it make?

The CBS intervals must be different in China.

I'm confused, just had my oil changed and the oil CBS reset to 27,000km/~17,000miles. What gives? 27,000kms is way too long, I'm doing it every 12,000km/~7,000miles.

I think it only applies to vehicles built from July 2013 onward.

I have had the oil changed at 7,500 - 10,000 or once a year, whichever occurs first for the life of our Z. With no basis for it other than healthy skepticism, I have long suspected the long oil service intervals were to save BMWNA money and not for the benefit of my car.

On another post, there was a reference to routine changing of brake fluid at the 3 year service; I don't see that listed in the maintenance table ????????????

BMW has changed its long time recommended oil change mileage intervals for all 2014 models and beyond. The changes apply to all vehicles produced from July 2013 on.

Previously, BMW recommended a 15,000 mile / 24 month Condition Based Service interval, but as of July 2013, the new basic interval will be every 10,000 miles / 12 months. This applies to both gasoline and diesel models.

Maybe some of the rental cars weren't much good after the warranty/rental period? We have stuck with 5,000 or 7,000miles on our Z4 even though that is probably overkill with the 0W40 Mobil 1 that we use. I don't trust the no-name bulk oil the dealer uses. No one at the dealer could tell us with any certainty who currently makes their 5W30 swill.

Are you saying the dealer doesn't use BMW oil? I find that hard to believe.
