2009 Z4 -dead Battery - Advise Needed

My buddy in Texas has a 2009 Z4 which has been parked in the garage for a few years and not driven. They never had it on a battery tender so it is obivously dead. He has had a charger on it for two days now and it will not start, radio will not turn on nor can he open the trunk.

Does anyone know how to get in the trunk so he can replace the battery?

He needs to get this vehicle running as it will be put up for sale after he cleans it up. For anyone in Texas it is a Garage Queen that went to sleep for a long tmie :-).

does the car have a pass through into the trunk? open it, fashion a wire hanger with a hook on the end and grab the emergency release handle under the trunk lid.

Garage List
Can't they just jump start the car, or apply power from another battery via remote battery terminals in engine bay, to open trunk?

see:
http://blog.bavauto.com/13460/bmw-de...hood-location/

E89 – Z4 (2009-current, sDrive-28i, sDrive-30i, sDrive-35i, sDrive-35is) – The battery junction terminal is mounted on the rear engine compartment firewall near the center ( toward the passenger side of center), behind the engine intake manifold. The terminal has a red plastic cover marked with “+”.

If your battery is stone cold dead, I don't think you can bring it back on life support.

The car is pulled all the way in a single car garage. They had a charge on it for a few days and nothing. Door locks work. No radio, can't open trunk and who knows what else. Car sat for years before my friend tried to start. Car is his brothers who is locked up. They are trying to get it running again to sell the vehicle but it is stuck in the garage.

Agreed, he is not trying to get the battery to work. He just wants to get the trunk open so he can replace the battery. Strange though that having the charger on the terminals under the hood that the trunk button will not operate. I'll update this post in a few days wen he gets back to the house and gives all the suggestions a try.

You will have to jump a booster on it instead of a charger. A charger will only trickle to the battery which will not charge anyway. You need to give the vehicle enough power to start it using the contacts under the hood and then you should be able to pop the trunk. But note that you will have to get BMW to reprogram the car to the new battery even if you are using the same type and size. The ECU has to see that a new battery is in place and that there is a new set of voltages coming from it. Otherwise it will not last very long. keep us posted on your success.

UPDATE: My buddy is trying to locate the emergency trunk release right now and thinks he found the triangle piece (like in the E9X's) but he cannot reach it. He is trying to get a coat hanger to pull on it. Can someone take a picture of theirs in the 2009+ Z4 and show where this release lever is and does he pull towards the back seat or straight down.

He wants this trunk open today :-).

I wish I could help but I am in California and he is in Texas.

Thanks guys!

So here are two pics from my 2013. One shows the handle stowed on a clip; the other after it has been released from the clip. You need to push the stowed clip towards the rear of the car to release it from said clip, then pull the handle towards the front of the car to trip the latch. Good luck!

Your lucky. UK cars don't have this handle.
Starting to get me thinking about fitting a back up means of lifting the trunk, as I have seen where this handle would attach to the mechanism.
I think a simple door solenoid with some wires fed out externally would be a good idea for remote boot release
