Its not sniping at Germany

Its sniping at any manufacturer looking to move production from the US to a third world country and THEN expecting to import those vehicles without some sort of tarrif/etc

I must have missed the part where Trump brought all his clothing line manufacturing back from Mexico and China.

You clearly missed my point about Germany. Never mind. Think on it again.

Trump really knows little about the automotive industry and it has especially shown over the past few weeks.

Part of Trump's complaints is that Germans don't buy enough Chevrolets but he fails to realize that GM now only sells their "iconic" Chevy models in Europe. Instead, GM Europe sells Opel and Vauxhall brands of which Opel's HQ is in Germany and sells plenty of cars in Germany and Europe.

I have no love of trump at all

I simply stated the facts based on what has been reported so far by the news

The facts are that neither BMW nor German companies as a whole are being targeted as others have claimed

The companies that are being targeted are ones that are seeking to move/expend current US production to third world countries and and then expect to import/reimport those products for sale in the US WITHOUT some sort of penalty

It's ok sport, most people struggle to understand the nuances of national two party politics, let alone the machinations of international geopolitics.

Now why would Trump be sniping at Germany... geopolitics... Germany... geopolitics... Hmmmm

You'll get there champ, don't worry.

That's a laugh. Since when has the US ever been interested in a level field when it comes to trade? The US is not a good trading citizen at the best of times, let alone under what appears to be an isolationist/protectionist new regime.

Trump's Tax

For those in the US like me. Does Trump have the power in put this tax in place without congress? I think congress is not up for this tax (Republicans included) so the chances of this going through seems slim? Also let's say if it does go through can anybody answer how long would it take them to put into effect and how this will this effect the price of the BMW G30?

Way to go! BMW will now regret their decision which didn't make sense from the start to everybody else other than shareholders. A luxury car build by cheap labor is just a ridiculous concept imo.

How about how BMW and Mercedes already have factories in the southern US rather than areas of Northern US and Canada so they can have cheaper labor?

The choice of N vs S is more complicated than just one of cost of labor

The northern states, particularly Michigan are notorious for being more expensive to operate in as a whole

And thats not even considering right to work and the inherent costs labor aside of being in a union/non RTW state

This concept can be justify with other factor: different tax level between city or state, availability of workers, availability of the lands etc. It is very difficult to justify that the decision is just related to labor cost. If that would be true all the Canadian manufacturing sector would be in Newfoundland. On the other hand manufacturing in Mexico is an obvious choice for cheap labor, low standard for pollution and worker right. When you have a free trade agreement it is the most profitable choice for companies.
