Cars that try to race you...

Not sure how often this happens to ya'll... but on the L.A. freeways and streets I get a constant barrage of people trying to race, which I find humorous and rarely do I give in.

Just this past week, three different cars.
1. a 1990's acura intergra, a little rice rocket, kept trying to get close on the freeway and rev his engine... it was amusing.

2. a Prius... are you kidding!

3. Volkswagen Touareg.

I usually look at the driver and just smile.

I'm on the L.A. freeways a lot too but I haven't experienced another car trying to race me. Is it because I'm a girl?

The same happens a lot in Miami. It usually happens while at a red light. I have adopted my fathers method of dealing with that sort of thing.

When at a red light, and someone revs their engine at me like they want to race, I rev right back like I am ready to go. As soon as the light turns green, they hauling ass down the street while I am going my merry way at well below the speed limit. Needless to say a lot of people don't think its as funny as I do, most of all when they see that its some young schmuck such as myself behind the wheel.

It seems to be a YOUNG man's thing - I had a Porsche and no one ever offered to race me.

They probably figured that my Buick was in the shop getting the turn signal indicator fixed to stay on all the time, and that I was driving my son's car!

The boxes of Depends on the passenger seat probably gave me away..........

Where I live there are usually only the local drivers who come on our roads...
There are a lot of local hotted up cars (wannabes), and a few contenders.
The local "ace" has a 599GTB. He takes on everyone and wins.
I haven't seen him as yet while in the Z4, but it may get him steamed up enough to challenge (as the red mist falls over him again).
There is a F430 out here as well, but I have only ever seen it driven at snails pace to the shops on the weekend...

The only guy who has made a noticable challenge so far (and I only take off in D with half throttle - not really trying for speed, more for exhaust bark) was in what we call a Ford Typhoon on my delivery day. The Typhoon is a 4.0litre straight 6, single turbo family sedan, that puts out 310KW (Z4 is 250KW) but he weighs 250Kg more and has either a sad manual tranny or a 6speed ZF auto. Shall we say he was embarrassed, even without breaking the 4500rpm self imposed limit.

At the track on the straight, with a range of BMs and porsches there, it was only the new 911s and an M3 CSL that I had to use the overboost button to keep up with.

i'm surprised people want to race, maybe they don't know the specs and out of jealousy they think they're gonna win and embarrass you.

i've had all the below try to race, keyword is "try"

cherokee SRT
300 SRT
mustang GT's
supped up civics with coffee can mufflers
mazda 3's
vw gti's or whatever those egg looking things are called
the previous generation z4 m coupe's
the previous generation m3's
as many acura rl, tl's, rsx-type s and tsx's as you can think of
the new ford taurus sho
maserati quattroporte
every single infiniti g35 and g37
every single nissan 350z and 370z
subaru wrx
mitsubishi's evo and eclipses
audi s4's and s5's

i can go on forever... some of these cars should keep up, but maybe the drivers are too afraid.

friends cars that can spank me are:
sl63 amg
every new ferrari
every new lamborghini
porsche carrera gt
porsche turbos, specially the 2011
m5s and m6s
aston martin DBS
corvette ZR1
audi r8 5.2

I haven't really been challenged to a race in the Z4 but there have been occasions when somebody thinks they'll pull along side coming up to a red light to get ahead of me. A half hearted launch easily takes care of most cars.

The most bizarre thing was all the challenges I got in the '02 M5. Camry's and minivans no less. I would look at them creeping forward and brake torquing, shake my head, hit the sport button, drop the clutch on green and illustrate just how foolish they were thinking they could race the M5.

I probably can count the number of 'challenges' made by other drivers in the past 10 years on my hands. Not many for some reason.

The most unusual thing that has attempted to race me at the lights was one of these: http://www.tarmac-mag.com.au/content...4008Skelta.jpg

A Skelta which is an Australian sports car. Very rare on the street.

I was in the 135i -stock mind you at the time- and let's just say the look on his face was classic!

Either that or he just realised what his resale value had dropped to...
That woudl be bad enough to make anyone revisit his lunch.

Something like that.

When I got my previous car (an IS350) I got challenged quite a bit by Z350's, Mustang GT's, and the like. Ended up teaching them a lesson everytime.

For some reason, noone has tried to race me with the Z4 yet. Maybe, like Banton, I finally look my age...

I was driving home from work with the top down enjoying the wind and the views on a beautiful, late afternoon when a Mitsubishi rice cooker came zooming up behind me. If I had my parktronic on, he would have easily been in the yellow behind me. Had I been 20yrs younger I would have let my anger get the better of me and I would have taken off and let the pursuit begin. Instead, I kept my pace and let him come alongside me. He honked once, I flipped him off and watched him take off on down the road.

After a couple of miles, driving at my usual pace, I caught up to him (he managed to get stuck at some traffic lights allowing me to catch up). He now flipped me off and, I think I heard this correctly, called me a "pussy cat." We entered the highway at the same time with me behind him. At the first chance he got, he took off weaving in and out around traffic, then boom went the dynamite. Two police cars blew by me and corralled the Mitsu which was at least a half mile ahead of me. Traffic slowed down. I made sure I looked that little A-hole in the eye as I passed by with a big-ass grin on my face.

It was a beautiful day.

I wonder who would win between your car and mine. Basically the same except DCT vs manual...I vote for the DCT

Went with some friends on Thursday on a 400km excursion. 6 maseratis 4200, 1 maserati 3200 which ended with coolant fluid loss and a Ferrari Maranello. On the free highway they were fast just because they could use all the rpm range and had no speed limiter, BUT on the twisties they could just follow. On a side note my baby with the H&R antirolls was a blast, I kept pushing and pushing and it just was on a trail even with sport+. I even tried to leave the gas pedal inside the turns just to see what happens and guess what, I didn't even bother. On the twisties the speed limit and signs indicated 50 or 60 km/h and we were hitting 110 km/h easily. On the pit-stop for coffee and photos, they were all just asking, except from the guy in the Maranello who was driving like mad, missed a turn and returned to find us 30 minutes later. DCT and twinturbos was my reply.
