No alarm>>how to get red lights flashing?
Just got my Z4 and as it has no alarm the red lights found under the rearview mirror and on the doors do not flash when I lock the doors with the remote. Is it possible to get these red lights to flash after I lock the doors? My other two vehicles do that and neither have an alarm. I could not find anything in the manual on this. I have read this can be set up on other BMW models.
Thanks in advance, RET |

You can set this confirmation signal by going to settings, then door locks using the idrive control. If you don't have idrive, you may have to have dealer program through your remote.

Thought RET46 was referring to headlight and tailight flashing to confirm locking and unlocking. Regarding the "clown nose" my previous BMW did not have alarm system, but dealer was able to program it to flash when car locked.

Almost sure you can progam headlights and tailights to flash when locking thru iDrive. I think the audible sound is only available if you have an alarm installed. With alarm wiring now a factory option I would think having dealer install would be more costly. Used to be able to get a kit for about $150 and another $100 to install. At least this was the case with my 335i.

can you expand a bit more on your experience? Did bmw actually tell your dealers service people that it could not be done or was your dealer just unable to figure it out? |

I think the Dealer is being less than honest or someone is lying to him/her, I had the alarm system installed 4 weeks after I got my Z4 by the Dealer here, have them check part set# 65 73 2 158 691, this is the complete alarm installation set. You also need three small clips, Part # 51 16 1 881 149 @ $.08 each.

When you get out of the car and walk away, then lock it with the remote, the headlights, turn signals and side lights all flash.
What benefit is there by also having the little clown nose inside the car (which is difficult to see from the outside) flash at the same time? ....or, am I missing something? |

Folks,
In my case the sales manager did a lot of research and was quite emphatic as was the service manager that the BMW factory alarm system for the new 2009 / 2010 E89 model CANNOT be installed at the dealership and can only be installed at the FACTORY. I will use Chuck B's information to re-challenge the dealer folks and get back to this forum when I get an answer. BTW the same holds true for the SmnartPhone adapter as they thought it was DELAER installed and apparently it too is not longer able to be installed by the dealer. Since they made a significant mistake here they reimbursed me the cost of the SmartPhone option, the cradle for my iPhone 3Gs AND the cost of the 6fl which was a required option for the Smartphone integration. This cost them $700.00 so I am sure that they checked it out before they agreed to my demand for the reimbursement. We'll see......

Memphis 2012,
I don't think so...... I can think of numerous combinations that even if you could afford to do them they would not be able to do a reasonable install for...

Why I want the flashing red lights...
is to have the appearance of the car being alarmed. I honestly thought the car had an alarm as standard equipment as it seems appropriate on a +$60000 car. Even the Boxster, the other car I had on my wish list, has it as STD and almost everthing is optional on that car. I figure as the light is built into the car, as I can see the red housing under the mirror, it could be activated through set up procedures.

I agree, for the price we paid, something as inexpensive as the alarm, should have been a standard item... But, hey that's BMW for ya'.

No one really listens to car alarms any more. It has become nothing more than white noise. Had ther car come with an alarm as a standard feature, the MSRP would probably be an additional $200+/-.
Car alarms have become nothing more than..........a way to keep car alarm companies in business. Last edited by BlueZ4AZ; 02-11-2010 at 09:15 AM.. |

Any tip ... How can one test if the alarm (already installed on my 30i) is functionning (regardless of the fact that nose light is blinking when locked) without any need of smashing the window , or shaking the whole car ???

For those of that don't have the factory alarm, is your clown nose red?
I don't have the alarm system. Don't have a red clown nose either. Mines more like a slightly tinted transparent clown nose. T |
