Shhh!
I have a friend who's a CA at a BMW dealer and he told me he just got some new intel about this: http://www.bmwblog.com/2011/10/26/ru...tion%E2%80%8E/.
Yes, based on the date of this blog entry, it's an old rumor, but consider it revived. I have no other details at all, including a timeframe, so I can't answer any further questions. Speculate away!

BMW have been quoted as saying it won't happen. But as a business of course everything and anything that might make them money or fame will be under consideration. Consideration means they're thinking about it. I think about a lot of things that never happen. None of it is important unless it does happen.

an M variant after 4-5 years of its original production? Unlikely. Especially when sales of normal Z4s are horrible. We're more likely to see a new Z4 (3rd gen) with an M.

I read one of the comments there from 2 years ago about Audi considering making an Audi TTRS Plus. Well he was right! They eventually did recently launch it in the TT's twilight years.
So maybe BMW are still considering the option. As said - put a V8 in there, make it a fixed roof coupe and they will have orders lined up. |

What about a tuned N54 in the E89 is not M class performance?
If tuned correctly it is equal if not faster, add more mods and it gets even quicker, even after that it would in total cost less than a M car. Don't get me wrong, I like most everything about the M lines. But when the numbers are what they are how can you not deny that is why they haven't released a E89 M. In my opinion they would need a different engine in the E89 to make it M, and I imagine the M division looked at the platform and knew they could only squeeze about 50-70 more HP out of the N54 and keep it emissions legal in the US. What I do not want to see, on the next Z they release a much lower performing model only to let them put a M out and make it look like a good buy for the performance compared to the lower models. I feel the E89 N54 tuned up to the 380-400HP range is M class performance. I don't need a ///M badge to make me love driving this car. |

Random pondering...
If we had an E85 & E86, then jumped all the way to E89, what would the next designation be? Did they purposely number it to death or will it likely see an F number? |

Yes, it will just be whatever chassis designation is next. F3X or F4X, etc. |
