Within a couple of weeks I got mine Z4 sDrive20i (LCI).
Because both the sDrive20i and sDrive28i uses the same N20 engine, extra horsepowers under the hood would be nice.
I can't find the link but over on the F30 forum members are saying there are internal differences such as pistons between the 20i and 28i so a chipped 20i will make about the same power as a stock 28i. I had hoped to get a 320i and chip to get to stock 335 power but that unfortunately is not happening.

Not been on here for a while but wanted to give a brief update. I've been running the 20i with the TMC chip and have had zero problems. The odd times that I've taken it it does feel sluggish in stock mode (much lower bhp and torque). What you really notice is how much more power is actually delivered lower down between 2000 to 3500 rpm. For me, as long as your insurance doesn't charge you massively more it's no brainer. Also, I have no idea why the TMC chip seems cheaper than others yet performs so well. I guess other people are just over charging.......

thanks for the update! got any 1/4 mile times or dyno figures?

I haven't heard of TMC.. if it isn't a well known chip, make sure you do some data logging to make sure it is a safe tune

Considering this product: http://www.tmcmotorsport.com/TuningB...px?s=996778732

I have the 2012 20i N20 w/manual 6 gear transmission. Anyone here with experience chip-tuning the 20i with a manual gearbox?

Have contacted TMC and got a very prompt answer, where they said it should be no problem. My more technical friends say higher turbo pressure could be more straining on the turbos, but that power train and gear box should be zero risk. Have also cross-checked the turbo charger parts at realoem.com and they really do seem to be exactly the same. The risk should then be minimal? I mean if the pressure is the same in the stock 28i with the exact same part...

Before I go ahead, anyone here tried this tuning box with the manual 6 gear transmission or have opinions on something that could go wrong?

Cheers,

-S-

BTW, some asked about dyno data - found this graph (see attachment) and the improvements seem to be all over the rpm range :-)

Credit card burning in my pocket to order this!

The TMC products seem good for both 20i & 28i....Does anyone know what boost the 28i runs at?

Another question: Will the box installed mean that comfort and sport mode now are both behaving as the "TMC supersport mode"?

There's still a big difference between the modes. I guess with the chip it now behaves similarly to a 28i in comfort and sport mode.

Over 19,000 miles on the clock now and it's still running great. Manual 6 speed btw.

Interesting, TMC told me the opposite - that both modes would now be the same... Looking forward to get the unit. Will try to time 80 to 130 km/h in fourth gear to quantify practical effect and post here.

I did consider the TMC - but decided to go for the JB4

Why?
  • Known Quantity - had an JB4 in 335i
  • Like the addedd functionality of the JB4 - error logs reading
  • Turn Map on off on the fly
  • Great JB4 install base and support via forums and UK dealer who provided assistance

Negative of JB4
  • Cost
  • More complex installation
  • More complex installation
  • Poor documentation - and user base on Z4 - hardly nothing its all F320 & F328 and some X1 - very little on Z4

It actually arrived today! The installation manual does not say anything about the placement of the actual tuning box. Do you (psytse or others) have advice on how to fixate it? Will strong velcro do the trick? And what is the best/safest placement in terms of heat etc? Maybe I have to go to a workshop after all... :|

I manned up and did it myself :-) Combo of blushing and pride when I used DUCT TAPE (after sticking it in place w/adhesive pads) under the hood of my Z )) I will change it with something more permanent in a while (even good duct tape does not love the heat). The placement I chose for the tuning box for now was vertically on the back of the windshield fluid box, would love some tips and comments about what others have done here.

Regarding performance I was a tiny bit disappointed about "relative low RPM 6th gear improvements", which I was really hoping for. Still feels quite "dead" pushing down the pedal at 110 km/h without shifting down. But 3rd and 4th gear on medium RPM seems to have gotten a lot more punch. The 80 to 130 km/h in 4th timings proved quite hard to do exact, but roughly a second improvement I would say. Subjectively I also felt quite a bit of improvement on a typical 3th gear overtake (similar acceleration as the one I timed, but obviously on higher RPMs).

MPG seems to be more or less exactly the same, wishful thinking might indicate a 5% improvement.

The manual "boost meter" on the tuning box was set to 6 (ouf of 10) on arrival. Left it unchanged (no Spinal Tap 11 on the scale, very disappointed).

Happy so far, as I mentioned I would love input on the best way you guys have found for fixating the box.

I would use cable ties?
As I was able to get my JB4 in my DMU box

Hope you still enjoying the extra power

Sure, used strips for the cables - pretty decent. But still to figure out a more elegant way for the main unit. Thinking about getting a second windshield fluid box and swapping them when leaving the car for service - then I could mount it properly on the back of it...

Yeah, I really enjoy it - the car runs quickly on its turbo-induced feet these days!

Yeah, from 1 to 10 - adjustable with a Philips screwdriver. Ships set at 6.

There is still a difference between the modes with the TMC, like psytse said.

Smoke - seriously I would not recommend going for warp factor 10!!

There is little usage of TMG on BMW's - As I spent ages researching
The N20 is an new engine, and its reliability is not truly known
If you ramp the torque up to much, there are reports of busting the crank

But its not my car --

Agreed, and txs for the concern from reading looks like setting 7 or 8 is best. Would like to know AFR's at high rpms for both TMC on setting 8 and JB4 on map 2 - the info hunt continues !
