Michelin Pilot Sport A/S - comments?

These ultra-high performance summer tires are RIDICULOUSLY slippery below 50 degrees.

I thought I could get by with them, as this is my last winter in the snow belt before we move to GA, and I only need to drive the car on Friday's but today being the first time I drove them on some packed snow proved to be nothing shy of treacherous. It was like a drunken toddler, blindfolded and sent out on an ice rink. And I've driven in snow my entire life so I'm well versed in it.

Considering that $1000 in tires is a hell of a lot cheaper than even the slightest ding on this $70k car, I'm thinking this is something I should do.

My thought is that if I can get a very good UHP All Season tire, that will work in a slight bit of snow as well as performing well in the wet & dry, I can run them and when they're shot I'll toss the UHP Summer Tires back on.

Does anyone here have any experience with the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires? Any reason I shouldn't do this??

I don't think that a dedicated snow tire would make sense since this is my last snowy winter and my driving here is VERY limited. I just need something that will give me a bit more safety to get through this.

Thanks for any input.

I've had the Michelin Pilot A/S Plus on a 550i for 3 weeks. I used to have Goodyear F1 and Conti SC2's on the 550i but never Bridgestone RFTs on it. The A/S Plus have good dry grip, but do seem to squeal earlier than the F1s. Maybe 2-3 mph less max speed in turns. Although, I am comparing the A/S Plus grip in cold weather compared to mostly warmer with the F1. The A/S Plus wet grip is quite good. I've not driven with them in snow. They are more noisy than the F1 but should be more quiet than the Bridgestone RFT on the Z4.

PS: I read a review somewhere that showed they had sufficient snow traction but can't be compared to dedicated snows. I've never had dedicated snows in Charlotte but Goodyear All Season did just fine in an X3. Of course its AWD.

Here's a comparison from Tirerack.com. Look at the far right column, and you note the amount of miles driven by the people who rated them.

I have them on my g35. they replaced ps2's. the a/s+ tires are the best tires I have ever owned and have much, much greater treadlife than ps2's or bridgestones.

that said, I am not sure I consider them a snow tire.

I'm running Yoko ADVAN S4s on my 335i and it does very well in cold temps but I really haven't driven in any appreciable snow. I'm surprised to hear that the Michelins don't perform well given their high ratings by TireRack. I plan to use the OEM RFTs on my Z4 until they are about half worn and then replace them with a good UHP A/S tire and may stick with the Yokos as I have been pleased with them.

in canada they quote a winter wheel and tire package. They show the 17 inch 290's with pirelli tires. Im not sure how good those tires are though in the snow? Does anyone know?

Don't think 17's will fit a s35i, brakes are too big.

Pretty sure that 17" wheels will not fit the s35i due to the size of the front brake rotors.

30i and 35i brake discs are 12mm different in size, the 17" 290's are designated for any E89's Winter package by BMW

The standard BMW Winter Package is at:
