Oil catch can

How important is it to have an oil catch can for a 35is and which one is recommended ?

It could help prevent the intake carbonisation the N54 suffers from. Depends what you use the car for and how long you're keeping it.

I suggest contacting Burger Motorsport to determine the compatibility of their offering with the configuration of the N54 under our Z4 hood. I followed and admired their product development as it accommodated the 135/335, but I have not confirmed any nuances for Z4.

IF you are tuned for high boost this product is essential to extending norminal operation, but if you're a soft pedaling cruiser rarely requesting 5psi boost you are okay.

The BMS is the only one that really works like it should. It is designed specifically for the N54 and I had one on my 135i and it picked up a lot of oil. Unfortunately, it is not designed to fit on our cars. The problem is that the clamp to hold the OCC is not the same on the Z4 as the 135 and 335.

I been wanting to have one of these installed as well. Considering the low sales numbers of the E89 I wonder if they'll modify their existing product to work on our cars.

Spoke to Bavarian Autosports last Friday. They expect to have one to fit our cars near the end of next month.

As my Z is under the Extended Gold warranty is this add on, if available, a BMW approved item that will NOT void my extended warranty?
If the engine suffers from the issues as described by what the oil can fix, why does BMW NOT install them as OEM?

It takes about 10 minutes to uninstall the BMS OCC so I would not worry about it.

I might be interested as well, but I rarely ever do WOT pulls. only at the track 3 times a year. will a OCC benefit me in the long run? any reliability issues?

Sent email to Jon at BMS. He said to get the 535i OCC because of the longer hoses. The only thing as mentioned in previous post is the clamp that holds the OCC to the brace, but you can always zip tie it or jerry-rig something.

I emailed Terry at Burger Tuning Monday he said to use the 535 OCC also and tie wrap to hold. No indication of new bracket in works... I'm looking for "Black Friday Specials".

I just finished installing BMS OCC. Used two 1-1 1/2" stainless hose clamps and a 3"x3" "T" brace. I ordered the 535 just incase I needed to extend the "U" hose (just made it in my location) Engine bay is tight and can needs to be offset towards firewall to clear wire looms and other hoses. Looks like a clean install. How was the install? I was curious, does the oil have to be topped off more because of a larger volume system? Sorry if it's a stupid question. I never had one of these, but I'm familiar with the oil issue, coming from a supercharged e46. I would have to add oil every 1000 miles, it after spirited driving.

Help....must be blind. Bought the Bruger n54-55 oil catch can but can't see which lines to cut. I have used the 3" t bracket and two 1-1/2" clamps as suggested. Now where do I cut?

Sent PM. I hung the can than hooked the straight line from the pvc valve (on valve cover) to input side dressed towards firewall (trimmed as needed. I cut approx. 3" off). Ran U hose from intake to output side.

I thought I would bump this thread. I just finished installing a BMS OCC on my E89 Z4 35i today. I also did the upgraded PCV valve invented by "Rob" at RB Turbos (and which is also for sale on BMS's website).

Like Bob, I ordered the OCC for the 535i for the longer hose. Special thanks to Bob for his photos and tips here, as well as numerous PMs. The install is relatively painless, but the OEM clips on the PCV hoses are a giant PITA. Also, the fit is extremely tight, so it takes a little finessing, but it is doable.

Anyway, the upgraded PCV valve and OCC should prevent any accumulation of blow-by oil in the intake tract and might help slow down carbon deposits on the intake valves (though I doubt it). Now I just need a walnut blast to get me back to new.

Just an update. Since install I check can approximately every 4 months (1500-2500 mi). I usually find and empty 1-2 Tablespoons of captured oil.
