Front End Update and Painted Roll Bar Project
Over the past week I have been updating my front end. I have never been happy with the matt silver inserts in the upper and lower front grills nor the silver roll bar covers. The silver seemed so random. So I purchased Gloss Black paint for the upper grill inserts and purchased from Bavarian Motors their BMW spray paint (A52) to match my Space Grey Metallic paint and clear coat on my Z.
Steps 1. I removed all peices and wet sanded with 600 1st and then followed with 1500 until each peice was a fully sanded surface with no hint of gloss. 2. I purchased Rustolem primer (gray) for plastic. I laid down on each peice 2 very light coats of primer and wet sanded in between each coat. 3. 3 very light, mist color coats with wet sanding in between. 4. 3 very light clear coats and sanded 1st coat only. The paint came out perfect and a paint shop could not have done better nor would they have done the details with all the wet sanding that I completed. This total project cost me $60.00 plus my labor. Pictures are my 4 front revisions and Roll bars painted 1. OEM Front End- Sliver grills 2. Gloss Black Upper Front Grill slats with chrome ring 3. Same as above with Lower Front Grill Inserts wrapped in CF 4. Lower F Grill inserts in CF with cross bar insert in Space Grey and Clear coat and the grill separators in Space Grey and clear. 5. Painted Roll bars The Space Grey spray paint is slightly darker then the OEM paint but I am finally happy after my 3rd revision to find the right mix of a sanitary and a clean look.

Looks good. Oddly I'm thinking of going the other way, my car is black so I'm considering taking the centre lower plastic mesh grille and painting it to match the silver lower intakes. I've seen a few with metal inserts for that mesh to replace them and I quite like it on a black car.

Very good work. Even if one didn't like the look, they would have to appreciate your skill. But I like the look quite a bit. Reminds me of all the little tweaks I did to my Countryman.

Thanks all.
I am very happy with the outcome and look. For me and my car the silver grill inserts and roll bars just looked out of place on the Space Grey. Plus Painting the black plastic center sections that separate the lower outside grills for the center grill give a similar effect and look of the M series bumper with everything painted the body color. On Black, like Maniacs, the silver looks great and fits and the center section in mesh and or silver would fit nicely. The CF wrap just took patience and us of a Heat gun to get the wrap to lay flat around the curve and contours. I did have to lay it on in 2 peices. Top and side are 1 piece and the bottom is a 2nd piece, but no one but me will know.
