Rest In Peace Dan Gurney

RIP Dan Gurney. International Racing Legend and true gentleman.

Mr. Gurney first man to win in F1 championship races for 3 different manufacturers: Porsche, Brabham and his own Eagle team. Supposedly the first man to spray champagne and reportedly the only man Jim Clark really worried about. He was 86 years old.

The first Grand Prix I attended, the 1965 US Grand Prix, we rooted big time for him. This photo is him in his Brabham on the main straight about to overtake Lorenzo Bandini's Ferrari. He finished 2nd (to Graham Hill) which as an American driver, was a really big deal. The guy was oh so fast. RIP.

3798J, do you recall where at The Glen the photo was taken that you posted? Was that the back straight at the time?

Jim, that's exactly where we were....about 2/3 of the way down (the inner loop didn't exist then).
Some other Dan Gurney stuff....
He was easy to spot at a distance because of how tall he sat in the car (note how high his plexiglass "windshield" stands)...changes made to accommodate his taller height like the "Gurney Bulge" in the roof of his Ford GT40.
We were at the '68 Indy 500 where he finished 2nd (to Bobby Unser) using a 303 ci stock block Ford engine (with its Gurney Weslake heads). Going stock block was going against all conventional wisdom at the time and yet he did.
Think you guys can probably tell I'm a Dan Gurney admirer.
