Looking at an e89.. Kind of.. Info needed..

Hi guys and gals, just quickly dropped in here from the e86 section..

Plans for my e86 (imola) coupe may have just changed a little and may develop it into a track/non daily. I won't be getting rid of it as i love it to death, but it's hard to drive when your not completely psyched up and it's a complete pain in the arse in traffic..

So, I've been eyeing off this nice example and it's def the colour I like and I sooo love the roof. Any chance I could get a little info on what I need to look out for (aware of the fuel pump issue) and if this would indeed be an easy car to own/drive.

Would love to know the good and bad points and the maintenance issues that are relevant to this car.

Here it is..

https://abudhabi.dubizzle.com/motors...GFnZT0y&pos=36

Very much appreciated everyone.

Any reason why not?

If it's been looked after, serviced and maintained, I would not have an issue wit buying a modded e86, are these not as robust?

Have you tried an E89 yet? Don't expect it to be anything like the Z4MC that you own. My opinion is just to try and see how it drives.

Pros:
Looks amazing (especially your example)
Great highway crusier
Comfortable
Hardtop
DCT
Quick straight line with tune

Cons:
Doesn't handle near what it looks like
High kms
Not much feel
Not reliable

There are something you cannot check on these cars, forexample fuel pump, double clutch, and turbos. Usually those parts fail when the car tuned and pushed hardly. If the previous owner use the car with e85 and higher map with cobb or jb4, probably hpfp is about to fail. DCT may give you some problems if previous owner tune the car over +400 without clutch upgrade. It is just my opinion, I always prefer to buy stock cars and mod it because I will always know what the problem is with the car.

Btw, if you are planning get one, please please please get with m sport package. When I was in the market I didn't really care about that option but it is one of the most important thing I would look.

I noticed you are in dubai, so you should check out the cooling systems to make sure they have enough capacity for the heat and the type of driving you are doing.

When I drive in the desert in socal with just a stage 1 Z435 I could see the intake air temperature rising in the data logs with just 1 highway pull, and after 2 minutes of all our driving at a desrt track in socal i can get the oil temp to 300F

I have been using the BMS Thermostat delete and it works great. I cannot get the temps to go over 250F no matter how hard I run this car. It is cheap insurance for about $60. You can probably leave it installed all year but I will need to switch back to the OEM thermostat when it starts to get cold.

Are you taking street driving though or track?

My car got to 260F for short bursts when I was really getting on it in canyons but it would go right back to 250F when I backed up slightly. Cooling was never an issue on the public roads

At buttonwillow in 90F ambient temps though, it was 270F and limp mode with cobb stage 1 after 1 lap, and with cobb uninstalled, I would have the oil temp pegged at 300F and the car in power reduction after 4 laps

I've obviously got no more skin in the game re the Z4, but just want the OP to be clear on what he is getting into re the stock heat capacity of the Z435 if he is going to track it in high temp areas.

In my experience this isn't like the S55 where the oil temps are going to be rock solid at 230F no matter how much you pound it at the track

Good point. I have not had my car at the track but I have ran back to back 1/4 runs 4 straight times in 90 degree weather and I was never able to get temps past 250. I also ran a 1/2 mile event and I still never got past 250.

I am certain that the N54 does not cool as well as the S55.

Let me just say this. I opened the link you gave but it had expired. No biggy for me because the real issue is not with that car but with your current Z4M. Since you may be used to how it drives and feels I assure you just as sure as I am writing this that you will find that there is a significant difference between the two. Unfortunately when they made the E89 they lost a lot of the roadster feel. I owned an E85 and switched to the E89 and while i like the E89 for different reasons I cannot say that the E89 felt like a roadster. Just my perspective from an E85/E89 owner.

I don't know if we are talking about the same feelings but I switch from E85 to E89 I found the car so heavy and passive. I was able to go between cars easily when I had my E85, but I feel like I am driving a 7 series right now.

I went the other way, from a 7 series (e38) to the e89 - it's just you...

I do miss that smooth ride though...

Sorry my friend, I too liked the newer look of the Z4 over the E85 version. I felt like the E89 looked meaner, and it certainly does. Just wished they had not made it feel so heavy and retained some of the roadster feel. I hop eyou find what you are looking for.

+1

Look is great, I miss that part of the car ownership

The expectation around weight and driving dynamics is key I think to avoid any chances of disappointment.

I think that my 35is feels like a roadster.
It's just a refined version...and PLENTY fast!

My 2015 35is is just as much a roadster as my old e85 3.0i was, just way faster, more comfortable, much better riding and better looking, I do miss the e85 though.

e89s as they come from the factory need new wheels and tires. I went 245mm 18" square with PSS and it is a very well handling car. I also saved iirc 9 pounds on each wheel, and that is while going wider in the front.

You can also turn to m3 roll bars and the like although at this time I am satisfied with the handling of mine. I have the adaptive suspension but it is mostly useless.
