Sean, remind me if you have additional cooling equipment (higher wattage radiator fan, auxiliary radiator etc) on your Z4?

I was in Rosamond on Wednesday with my stock 35i and it was a total limp mode party...

Z4 is stock except for wheels (Apex EC-7s) and tires (RS3s).

Do you have a 6MT or DCT?

My temps got really hot at Chuckwalla this past weekend, ~300-310, hitting 320 before i did a cool down lap

the way I keep the temps down is I do 1 warm up lap, ~3 hot laps, cool down half lap to a full lap, then start again.

you can't go all out the entire session, the car can't handle it. This is where the NA S65 in my M3 shined, i had no issues with heat or excessively high oil temps

Reason I asked what tranny you have is: Do you maybe shift too much?
When it's hot, it's best to try and not shift excessively from what my experience. and lift off a little earlier that you would on a cooler day
This is just the nature of stock turbo cars (heck, even modified ones)

I remember 1 turbo car catching on fire Saturday, and at least 2-3 more having engine issues due to the heat.

Limp is nothing compared to what these JDM guys experience..

DCT. In S mode the computer was short shifting and not downshifting, as expected, to keep the car out of high rpms as the oil got past 270F

I think if the Z had the cooling gear that the 1M/335is had it would do better.. I agree it can't handle going all out more than a few minutes.

I don't use S mode, i feel it shifts awkwardly.

I always use manual mode so that it's in the right gear

Make sure you are driving in Sport+, otherwise it won't drive right (from my experience)

270F is nothing, you shouldn't go into limp mode at 270

320+ is where you start risking limp mode. 330+ for sure

You may want to consider a BT cable to clear those codes, or a CT cable

As I read up on this, it seems that people get limp mode based on a variety of other factors as well, like the coolant or gearbox. Who knows, perhaps those were coming into play, and I don't have a way to measure them.
