I'm curious about something else. What if you don't bother getting the gap (or whatever flaw) fixed and u turn in the car this way, can the dealer hold you accountable for that? Who's to say the owner didnt do it? I'm nervous about this car cause its my first lease. Hopefully the dealer fixes it without issues. The contract said the car had 10 miles on it but on my way home I noticed that it had 60. I hope this isn't the reason my bumper is misaligned.

This may not be a rental, the OP never answered that question. I think he has enough of a paper trail to prevent any additional liability at turn-in if that's the case.

Well, Im also asking this question for me. I contacted the dealer and he said after he sees the pictures he will see if they will be willing to fix it. I just dont want to end up paying for this mistake later on.

Michael,

You did right with following up with the e-mail about the misaligned bumper.

Just as a foot note; they do take very good care at the factory about quality. I say this since I visited the plant also I have family members working at 2 BMW plants. A misaligned bumper would never leave the factory. The quality standards at BMW are just too high for something like this to happen.

From personal experience with my former Z4 e89 I just touched a concrete parking lot barrier and my front bumper got scratched in the same area yours did and at the same time the bumper was misaligned much more then yours. I simply put on a pair of heavy gloves and forced/pushed the front bumper back into alignment. The fix was not perfect, only I could see still a slight misalignment. I am mentioning this simply to demonstrate how easy it is to move that front bumper in and out off alignment. When I traded my Z4 I told the sales man about my mishap and how I fixed it. He told me they would fix it before they re-sell my Z4 e89

It's a lease. Who could pass up such ridiculous low rates?

Then I would NOT worry about it. You have a paper trail.

My Z4 went into the body shop at my dealer a short time ago, to sort out the bumper cover alignment issue. Last night, while being cut off by an 18-wheeler, I noticed my horn wasn't working. Apparently they did not reconnect it during reassembly after replacing the bumper cover last week. *sigh*

Incompetence is rather annoying, isnt it?

So here's the picture that is emerging. Dufus the mechanic first drops or drags the new bumper, scraping the paint. Then he puts it on without checking the panel gaps, likely due to some clips or fasteners that he broke off in his attempt to install the bumper. That installation procedure, perfected over his long 6 month career, involves holding the bumper in a bear hug while charging at the car like an offensive linebacker. Then he takes a break to scratch his butt, and forgets to hook up the horn 25 minutes later when he's back on the job. Good to know BMW service is on par with everyone else .

Make sure you check the headlight washers too... They are probably aimed forward, which will be useful if you ever want to wash the tail lights of the car in front of you.

I think they got it right this time.

I picked up my car at the dealership today. It looks like they sorted out all the issues I've been complaining about. I took a photo of another Z4 in the showroom (first photo) to use as a reference to compare to the repair work done on my car (second photo). The panel gaps look correct now.

Happily, they resprayed the bottom of the bumper where that annoying scuff mark used to be (third photo).

Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the performance of the sales staff at my dealership (but not the body shop), and I'm especially happy with the engineering in this car.
