Wink What has six cylinders and is as fast as a V8 M3?

Answer: the new Z4 35is.

That's what I just read in the latest BMW magazine from BMW themselves. Pretty clever marketing; it got me interested.

So people that have mentioned the 35is feels as fast as a e92 M3 even before full break-in might just well be right...in a straight line that is.

I am hoping Terry from BT develops a JB3/JB+ compatible with the 35is to take it even further. He is working on one for the 335is at the moment.

..and since BMW has been conservative with it's 0-60 times for the 35i and 35is, we can figure the news is even better.

My 35i has a dinan stage II remap (380hp and tons more torque) It IS faster and quicker than my M3 (2005) ever was and it's probably even with a new M3 in speed (not handling).... at our altitude anyway, 4000ft

It's what I've been saying - for road cars, torque is king not horsepower!

The 35i and 35is have equal or more torque plus they are lighter cars. Add a Dinan tune and BAM!

I'll let you know soon.
I saw mine at the dealer today - pick up in three days.
It may have more torque, but its suspension set up will never let it keep up with an M3 on a track (its natural habitat).

I see the Z4 35is as a car suited to a different purpose. its not meant to be a race car. IMHO...

Agreed, certainly the M3's track prowess is far superior the Z4.

I had E92 M3 & JB3 equiped 135i coupe, the JB3 now goes on the Z4 35i. Map 5 is awesome, both are quicker than the M3 ( & the 35is), 135 out handles & brakes the M3 as well. Whomever said torque is king is correct - the M3 is gutless compared to the turbo & a much better driver (though the M3 sounds great up high), problem is traction control is on all the time!

Got rid of the M3 for a 997.2, says it all. Got rid of the 135i for the Z4 just last week.

Agree about the "power tie" feeling between E92 & Z435 and it is quite impressing i admit.
I had the chance to drive the E92 recently in Nurburging & while handling feels sharper (my idea is that it carries a far better steering system) power felt just like my Z435i -even without any mods!

Here is a comparison between M3 and Z4 weight and power ratios. My feeling is that peak horsepower figures have little meaning for street performance. Torque is KING! Horsepower is high speed sustainability whereas torque is the force that presses you back in your seat. That being the case, more is better. And, that's where the Z4 N54 really shines in comparison to the M3. Again, not comparing track performance but street performance. In the chart below showing horsepower (hp) and torque (tq) ratios, smaller numbers are better.

You'll notice the Z4's weight is superior to the M3, which is a big advantage. And, with a Dinan Stage II upgrade, it has 421 lb-ft of axle twisting tq!

Not sure I'm reading your chart right, but the (UK) iS has 450nm of torque standard and 500nm for 7 seconds?

Even the 35i has 400nm of torque

The numbers quote were the U.S. specs with torque in foot pounds.
